What is Dyslexia?
- Dyslexia is a learning disorder that makes reading difficult due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding).
What causes Dyslexia?
1) Hereditary/ Genetics
There are Multiple causes for Dyslexia, and some are more common causes that others. I will be focusing on 2 causes.
2) Auditory Processing Deficiency
1) Hereditary
- Dyslexia runs in families. Specific genes (most common: DYX1 and DYX9) have been linked to dyslexia and if a parent or close relative has dyslexia or this gene, than the likelihood of a child having it increases.
2) Auditory Processing Deficits
Auditory processing deficits can impact the ability to perceive and interpret sounds accurately. Phonological processing difficulties affect the ability to recognize and manipulate the sound structure of words. Thus, it can be difficult to distinguish between similar sounds like "b" and "d." This leads to problems decoding words while reading and writing.
Mitigation
- Structured Literacy Interventions can help.
- programs help students to break down the words into sounds (phonics) and improve their decoding skills.
- Reading Specialists or Tutors
- working with specialists trained in dyslexia-specific methods can provide individualized support.
- Technology and assistive tools
- audiobooks or text-to-speech software to aid in comprehension, reading, and writing tasks.
- Accommodations in school or work
- Extra time on tests, modified assignments, access to technology tools that can help students with dyslexia.
- Regular Reading Practice
- Daily reading practice with books slightly below the difficulty level to build confidence. and encourage the repeated reading of familiar texts to improve speed and accuarcy.
