Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)

Communicative Language Teaching

It redefined language learning by prioritizing communication in authentic contexts. It views language as a means of interaction, emphasizing fluency and appropriateness over grammatical accuracy. Teachers act as facilitators, designing interactive tasks such as role-plays and group discussions. Students take on active roles, using language collaboratively to achieve communication goals.

Characteristics

ESL teachers can encourage students to interact with each other with minimal direct correction.

Students do most of the talking

Indirect feedback or conversational redirections that do not interrupt a conversation.

Variables such as age and proficiency can influence how effective indirect and direct feedback are in classrooms that utilize the CLT approach.

Students might engage in role-playing based on real-life scenarios such as discussing hobbies and popular culture

CLT activities are most effective when they allow students to work together in pairs or groups.

Activity

1. The teacher surveyed the students' favorite movies. 2. Students watched a few minutes of the movie about the first time Harry, Hermione, and Ron met on the train. 3. The teacher asks volunteers to role-play the dialogues. 4. The teacher asks the students to work in groups and imagine being one of Howart’s students meeting for the first time. 5. They write a dialogue guessing the questions each can ask depending on their personality. 6. Students act out the dialogue in front of the class.

One common example is the “Describe and Draw” activity. In this exercise, one student describes a picture to their partner, who must draw it based on the description and ask follow up questions

These discussions can be based on a variety of topics, such as current events, cultural issues, or personal experiences.

Role-playing activities are a staple in communicative language teaching. These activities involve students taking on specific roles and acting out situations that they might encounter in real life. For example, students can simulate a visit to a doctor, a job interview, or a shopping trip.

One popular game is “Taboo“, where students must describe a word without using certain “taboo” words. This encourages creative thinking and helps students expand their vocabulary.
