"Having the opportunity to interview and talk to Senora Estrada made me feel like I was connecting to my roots by discussing similarities, opinions, and facts on/about Hispanic culture. Additionally, I felt like my voice was being heard and my opinions were bigger than just a teenagers opinion, also being able to connect my life with an adult in the real world make me feel encouraged to start my journey in the real world. Being able to participate in the podcast episode made me realize how thankful and proud I am to be a part of a diverse and exciting time in the world." Samir

student reflection on spanish episode

"Going into the Housmans podcast episode, we knew recording the podcast episode in French was going to be far from what we typically used to do, as most of our episodes have been filmed in English. The episode being recorded in a different language meant that we were going to have to put far more effort in understanding and crafting our responses effectively than the episode being filmed in the typical English language. Despite these new-found difficulties, both of us were up for the challenge and were thrilled to be able to conduct an interview in a non-native language. About twenty minutes before the episode, we practiced exchanging responses in French and getting used to the language switch, the preparation getting us even more elated for our first French podcast episode. Throughout the podcast, even though at times we didn’t understand exactly everything he was saying, we were still able to pick up on certain words or phrases which we were able to build on to foster interesting conversations. Ultimately, we had a great time doing what we love most; communicating in French. Hearing about his story working in the technology field in addition to how his cultural background impacted the type of person he became truly solidified a prime example of why we continue to do what we do: to better understand one another. Now, many might ask: “Why did you want the podcast episode to be filmed in French? Why not film it in English to save yourself some trouble? For both of us, Romina and Sasha, we hold a great passion and interest in the culture of France and the French language. Committing countless hours to competing in French comprehension competitions and practicing our skills both inside and outside of the classroom, this determination to learn the French language inspired us to implement our passion through a new medium: podcasts. Combining our passion for French with a new medium of expression, this episode not only served as a turning point from what we regularly do for typical podcast episodes, but it was also a way for both of us to become immersed in the French language and culture in a way that we couldn’t have done if the podcast episode had been filmed in English. We greatly enjoyed our conversation with Mr. Housmans, learning of how his culture influenced the type of person and career he pursued. We look forward to hosting more podcast episodes with many more French speakers and hopefully expanding the podcasts to other languages as well!"Romina Azarm and Aleksandra (Sasha) GreyenbuhlAround the Globe Podcast
