Hypothesis

The main hypothesis of the article is that online library book clubs can help to promote the love of reading and address the decline in reading among teens.

According to Scharber et al, “The future of successfully engaging preteens and teens in literacy activities (i.e. reading and talking about a good book!) depends in part on offering the option to do it online (2009).

The article then points out how online book clubs are inclusive; they allow people in different time zones or special needs to participate.

Another positive for online book clubs is that using technology allows students to connect to each other using a familiar platform.

Lastly, online book clubs make it possible for students to join who may have issues such as transportation or scheduling.

The article uses two examples to support this: A girls-only book club and a teen book club promoted during Tech Month.

The article does note that there needs to be more research past the two book clubs studied.
