What does it mean to humanize personalization and how can you use it in your educational setting?

But we mustn’t conflate personalization with individualization, and we must resist the temptation to individualize learning through digital programs. These programs are more likely to dehumanize learning and institutionalize our students, when what we need most is the rehumanization of learning (France, 2021).

The Brain

Think About It

Understanding the structure and jobs of the brain, helps adults and students understand the reasoning behind their reactions and can use that to create a better tomorrow.

How can learning about the brain, help someone self-regulate?

Regulation

Understanding when to stop, look, breath, and listen

Breathing

Resource

When one can focus on breathing, it helps calm the brain from fight, flight, or freeze reactions. Calm Brain = Calm Body

How can educators assess students knowledge on a certain topic without using standards-based grading?

Standards-Based Grading

We did not really arrive at our current conception of points-based A, B, C, D, F style grading until almost the beginning of the 20th century. It's really only about 100 years old. . Grades are not a measure of intelligence. They're a measure of your ability to take an assessment about something (Young, 2023).

Authentic Assessments

Technology

Real world learning student centered such as performing a task, conducting an experiment, or designing and building a project based on real life situations.

Empower and Innovate Digital Tools

Digital Portfolios

Summative Assessments

Evaluative in nature taking place after instruction is complete guage mastery of a skill or conpentences

Formative approach Highlight learners natural progression

Formative Assessments

Measure knowledge gather information to modify instruction for teaching and learning.

Myth 1: Personalizing learning means that the curriculum must be individualized. The reality is that curriculum must be designed so that all learners can access it. Myth 2: Personalizing learning means that the curriculum must be interest based. In reality, interest and engagement are not synonymous. Myth 3: Personalizing learning lies within the teacher’s locus of control. Instead, personalizing learning is a partnership between educators and learners. Myth 4: Technology is necessary when personalizing learning. The reality is that technology can help, but only in a way that humanizes the classroom and preserves human connection. Myth 5: Digitally driven personalization paves a path to equity. Instead, to restore equity, we must focus on inclusive practices that remove barriers to learning (France, 2021).

Students work on a project over an extended period of time – from a week up to a semester – that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. They demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public product or presentation for a real audience. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills. Project Based Learning unleashes a contagious, creative energy among students and teachers (What is PBL?).

Differentiation

The What and The How
  • Horizontal and vertical learning models
    • Grouped Based on Ability
  • Strategies
    • Provide Choice
    • Same Goal / Differnet Style
  • Four Main Areas of Differentation
    • content, process, product, and environment

Differentiation stems from the research-based perspective that students will engage more fully with learning and learn more robustly when teachers practively plan with their differences - as well as heir similarities - in mind.

CBE assessments will require students to put their pencils down and show what they know in new—and relevant—ways (Thoeming, 2018).
