Following the overturning of Roe v Wade, people on social media have continued comparing real life today to Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. On 24 June, the United States Supreme Court’s ruling eliminated the constitutional right to abortion in the country, leaving it up to the states to determine whether to ban the procedure or not. The ban could potentially force women and girls to carry pregnancies to term, since the court’s conservative supermajority dismissed rulings from 1973 law. Following the Supreme Court’s decision, people have gone to social media to compare American’s society and everyday life to that of Atwood’s hit book, The Handmaid’s Tale.

The contraceptive pill is one of the biggest signifiers of female sexual liberation. It’s become the most common contraceptive used by women in the U.S. and UK. In 2020 you have the choice of progesterone-only pills or the combination pill depending on what suits your body. May 9 marks 60 years since the FDA’s approval of the birth control pill and as National Women’s Health Week starts focus has turned to how accessible the pill is to those who need it and whether a male version of the pill will be developed anytime soon. The Food and Drug Administration approved the world’s first commercially produced birth control pill, Enovid-10 on May 9, 1960. The UK followed suit only a year later making it available on the NHS in 1961. The pill was made by the G.D. Searle Company of Chicago, Illinois, and was pioneered by activist, educator and nurse Margaret Sanger. Sanger also opened the first birth-control clinic in the United States in 1916. Gregory Pincus and John Rock started to run clinical tests of the pill in 1954 and six years later it was FDA approved. However, in the U.S., it wasn’t until 1965 that married couples were given the right to use the pill and that was only in 24 states. In 1972 the Supreme Court made it legally available to everyone.

• Freely given. Consenting is a choice you make without pressure, manipulation, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

• Reversible. Anyone can change their mind about what they feel like doing, anytime. Even if you’ve done it before, and even if you’re both naked in bed.

• Informed. You can only consent to something if you have the full story. For example, if someone says they’ll use a condom and then they don’t, there isn’t full consent.

• Enthusiastic. When it comes to sex, you should only do stuff you WANT to do, not things that you feel you’re expected to do

• Specific. Saying yes to one thing (like going to the bedroom to make out) doesn’t mean you’ve said yes to others (like having sex).
