Quanto si verificava nel firmamento veniva interpreto secondo uno schema noto agli specialisti, che si fondavano su raccolte di dati accumulati nel tempo: gli astrologi del passato avevano annotato le coincidenze tra determinati fenomeni celesti ed eventi più o meno favorevoli e, a distanza di secoli loro colleghi si aspettavano il ripetersi di analoghe corrispondenze.
