Oscar Wilde, born in 1854, was a writer, poet and playwright. Born in Dublin, he studied at Trinity College Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford. During these years he was noted for his literary talent and eccentric personality.

Because of his sexual orientation, he was sentenced to prison for ‘acts of indecency’ and it was the end of his public career. Wilde died in Paris in 1900 impoverished and exiled in France.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a comedy by Oscar Wilde about two men, Jack and Algernon, who call themselves ‘Ernest’ to escape social norms and seeduced two women. The lies are compounded when the women discover the truth; the play critiques marriage and identity through absurd and humorous situations.
