Present Perfect

The present perfect tense in English is a verb tense used to express a relationship of action between the present and the past. That is, the action began in the past and continues in the present.

Examples

Steps:

  1. Identify the three elements of the sentence (Subject / Verb / Direct Object)
  2. Place the direct object in the subject position in the sentence
  3. Include the verb to be in the same tense as the original sentence. Note: The verb to be must coincide in person with the complement, not with the subject.
  4. Add the verb from the original sentence
  5. Add the preposition by
  6. Finally, put the agent of the action

Formula

Passive Voice

In everyday language, we often use the active voice, in which the subject is the one who performs the action. However, we also tend to use the passive voice without realizing it, when the subject becomes passive and the emphasis falls on the person or object that experiences or receives the action.

Reported Speech

Reported speech is used to describe what someone has said without using the exact words that the person said.

  • She said she was coming to class.
  • I told you I wouldn’t be able to come.
  • You said you would help me!
Personal pronouns need to be adapted to the person they refer to and who is speaking. The verb tense is also modified depending on its relationship to the present moment, which generally involves moving it to the past (for example, from the simple present to the simple past, as in the previous sentence). And in reported speech, an introduction is added (“She said that…”, “She asked if…”) to introduce what the person said.

Used To

The use of “used to” indicates something that occurred or happened in the past on a regular basis.

Extras

During this semester I tried to practice when songs appeared on my English playlist and I identified an artist whose rhythm I can better follow and distinguish the pronunciation of the words in her songs. I think I have improved my fluency a bit compared to last semester.
