Exploitation of children in factories

Definition

Child factory labor refers to the employment of children in abusive and degrading working conditions, often in violation of labor laws and children's rights. This practice may include excessive working hours, very low pay, lack of adequate safety and health conditions, and lack of educational opportunities. Children exploited in factories may be subjected to physical and psychological abuse, and their physical and mental well-being is seriously compromised.

Origins and current situation:

Child labor increased significantly during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. With urbanization and the growing demand for factory labor, many parents were forced to send their children to work to help earn a living. Children were employed in extremely harsh conditions, often in mines, textile mills, and other industries. Initially, there were no laws to protect child laborers. It was only during the 19th and 20th centuries that several countries began to introduce child labor laws, often in response to social activism and reports on working conditions.Today, an estimated 160 million children are involved in child labor worldwide. The situation varies greatly between countries; while rates of child labor are decreasing in some countries, others continue to struggle with child labor, often in contexts of extreme poverty and lack of access to education. Children are frequently employed in high-risk sectors, such as agriculture, fishing, garment manufacturing, and domestic work. They often work in dangerous conditions, with long hours and low wages.

The exploration of child in Oliver Twist is central to understanding the novel and offers a reflection on the social inequalities of the time. The novel begins with the devastation of Oliver's life in an orphanage, a harsh reality where children are treated like burdens rather than human beings. Poor nutrition, harsh discipline and a total lack of affection are a form of institutional abuse. Dickens uses this setting to highlight the inefficiency and cruelty of the welfare system of the time. After being raised in an orphanage, Oliver is sent to work in a workhouse, where his life is characterised by deprivation and abuse. In this environment, children are treated like commodities rather than human beings. They are forced to work in grueling conditions, often on reduced rations. In one particularly memorable scene, Oliver has the courage to ask for an extra helping of food, uttering the famous line, "Please, sir, may I have a little more of your soup?" This act of rebellion provokes the indignation of the workhouse's leaders and marks the beginning of a further ordeal for the young man. The detailed description of the misery and exploitation of children serves Dickens to criticize society and the institutions that allow such abuses. His work highlights injustice and social inequality, not only through Oliver's experiences, but also by illustrating the lives of other characters who live in situations of great difficulty.

Iqbal Masih was a Pakistani child worker and activist, who became a symbol of the fight against child labor. Iqbal Masih was born into a very poor family. At the age of four he was already working in a furnace, at five he was sold by his father to a carpet seller to pay off a debt he had incurred for the wedding celebrations of one of his sisters. When he was ten years old, he managed to escape. He met Ulla Khasi, who worked with exploited minors and who gave him a glimpse of a different world, in which children of his age went to school and had rights. Iqbal decided to commit himself to the freedom of child slaves and denounced the factories of exploitation, the tricks and connivances that made it possible. His voice began to be heard and taken up by newspapers, Western television, and humanitarian organizations. The system began to enter into crisis, exports of carpets began to decline, and the child became a problem. On April 16, 1995, Iqbal Masih was assassinated.Following his death, the issue of child labor, especially in Pakistan's carpet industry, received even more attention, making Iqbal a true symbol of this cause.

among fast fashion companies we still find companies that exploit child labor, such as Shein, a famous company that sells low-cost clothing and more. Shein admits cases of child labor among its suppliers in China, with illegal working hours and minimum wages
