You decide...Concern or No Concern?

Lower level concern

No concern

A parent slaps their child in the showers and other parents, swimmers and you as the teacher observe this happening

This a lower level concern and should be reported to the safeaguarding team. It is unlawful for a parent or carer to smack their child, except where this amounts to 'reasonable punishment' (In England). We want every child to have a fun and safe time at our lessons, so these situations should always be reported so that we can investigate further. If you work at our Scottish venues you should contact Safeaguarding at the earliest opportunity.

What do you think?

A child pushes another child underwater during the lesson and the parent intervenes, because the teacher's back is turned whilst dealing with another child

This is not a safeguarding concern. HOWEVER this is a feedback and development opportunity to be better at teaching positioning & managing a group of swimmers and a development opportunity for the manager to seek and give feedback to customers

What do you think?

A swimming teacher assists a child on their breaststroke, by adding pressure by holding their feet to turn out and moves legs for them to understand the action required

This is not acceptable, this is poor practice by the swimming teacher and should be reported to the safeguarding team as a lower-level concern. If you see this happen, or you do this yourself as a teacher please contact the safeguarding team who will arrange for some training supporting and mentoring to help you improve your teaching practices.

What do you think?

A swimming teacher gives the whole class star of the week, except for one child.

This is a concern. This should be reported to safeguarding as a lower level concern. This could be thoughtless or inadvertent behaviour, however if intentional it could be considered to be bullying, or emotional abuse. Our process is to award only 1 star of the week each lesson, spreading the rewards over the weeks for all your swimmers. This builds motivation but also resilience and understanding.

What do you think?

A male lifeguard flirts regularly with a 17yr female swim teacher and says they won’t do anything because she is under 18, she feels uncomfortable and is not interested

This should be reported to the safeguarding team at the earliest opportunity. This could be deemed as sexual harassment as it is unwanted verbal conduct of a potentially sexual nature. This would be managed as a serious concern (case 2) by the safeguarding team. Please see our company anti-sexual harassment policy for more information and training
