Fondata nel 699 dagli arabi con una funzione di difesa dalle incursioni bizantine dal mare, sul sito di un precedente insediamento berbero nell'entroterra di Cartagine, distrutta nello stesso momento.

Dopo un periodo in cui la Tunisia passò sotto il Protettorato francese, sancito nel 1881 dal Trattato del Bardo e poi dalla Convenzione della Marsa e durato fino al 1955, l'autonomia interna e la dichiarazione di indipendenza del 20 marzo 1956 posero fine alla dominazione coloniale.

L'’economia dipende fortemente dalle esportazioni di minerali, in particolare del petrolio e dei fosfati, dal settore manifatturiero in continua crescita che ha ricevuto molti investimenti, e dai prodotti agricoli. Il contribuisce fortemente alle entrate, così come le rimesse di lavoratori migranti che vivono all’estero.
