Who's LEE SUNMI?

Sunmi is a 32 year old South Korean singer, songwriter, dancer and producer; She was born in May 2nd, 1992; Training period: 1 year (since she was 14); Debuted; 15 years old.

Her Past/Family

Sunmi became a trainee under JYP Entertainment to earn money for her family while her father was sick. Unfortunately he died before she could make her debut.

Borderline Disorder

In 2020, on a episode of Mnet's 'Running Mates', Sunmi confessed that 5 years ago she was diagnosed with a Borderline Personality Disorder. DETAIL: In the Korean Industry it's controversial to talk about their health so openly like Sunmi did, so a lot of people praise her for it.

When she was featured on the podcast 'Spotify: Mic Check' she talked about her struggles with BPD and how it negatively impacted her and her mental health. Due to her overwhelmed state she decided leaving Wonder Girls to focus on her studies.

"I wasn’t sure whether my choice was right or wrong. I just needed some time. At that moment, I had no choice but to stop, because both my body and mind were exhausted and unhealthy."

How Did She Deal With It?

After Sunmi got diagnosed she started her treatment with medication and rest. And some years later when she got used to her emotions she decreased her medication. Sunmi also said «I'm strong, no I became stronger.»

She once stated that her diagnosis impacted her music and her understanding of life in general. Now she feels comfortable and open about her mental health and tries comforting and helping others who face similar problems. According to Sunmi, her music is based on her own feelings.
