Update from the Head

This week began with a beautiful concert on Sunday honouring 100 years since the passing of Gabriel Fauré with a stunning performance of his Requiem Mass at Ampleforth Abbey. We have a busy programme of events coming up. I am looking forward to St Cecilia Concert at the Abbey this Sunday, where tickets are free of charge for all those who register.

On December 8th the Schola Cantorum and Ampleforth and Ryedale Concert Choir are performing Handel’s Messiah. As we approach Christmas, our students in the College Theatre are excited to present Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. Performances will take place on the 5th, 6th and 7th of December and are open for bookings.

Update from the Head

On Monday, the whole College came together in our Field of Remembrance to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who gave everything. It was a beautiful day and a poignant reminder of service.

Update from the Head

I received a lovely thank you letter this week from the Headteacher at Oak Field School for our generous donation from the Ampleforth College Friendship Project. Many of their pupils have profound and multiple difficulties. This will help them to fund and subsidise opportunities and resources which are invaluable to their pupils, especially around high quality interactive arts performances and workshops in this theatre. At the end of the week I attended the St Hugh’s music concert on Friday. This was very entertaining and certainly woke everybody up, featuring a mix of classic and more modern performances.

Update from the Head

This weekend our staff are preparing to welcome current and new students and parents at our Sixth Form Options Morning. We also have a busy weekend of sport to hopefully build on the many excellent performances earlier. This included the U15 Rugby team, who progressed to the 4th Round of the National School’s Bowl Competition, while the U14 Girls Hockey team won 3-0 against Stonyhurst, and the U14 Boys Rugby also won. Good luck to all our teams! All best wishes, Peter

Message from Mrs Dent

We were proud to have so many members of our house take part in the Remembrance parade and ceremony on Monday. A fine job carried out by Isabel, Hattie, Coco and Katie, who also served at the Hovingham parade on Sunday. The main theme of this week has been supporting our Year 13 through their first round of trial exams - well done to them for working so hard and approaching the kick-start to the final stretch of their A level year so calmly. With 18th Birthday celebrations for Lottie and Agnes, they can afford to take a breather now from the revision. Year 9s and 12s had the opportunity of Reconciliation on Monday, followed up with an evening of Compline and Cocoa for Year 9 on Wednesday. Year 11 are looking forward to meeting up with Scholarship candidates this evening at a special year group social and Year 10 are planning to host their Year group on Saturday evening. Our CAFOD Yound Leaders are busily making advent plans to raise money for our house charity. With all good wishes for the week ahead. Ceri Dent, Housemistress St Aidan's House

In other news ......

The Schola's performance of Faure's Requiem on Sunday afternoon was sublime and we are proud of the continued strong contribution of St Aidan's house-members to this most treasured Schola - no fewer than 11 of our girls commit weekly in service to our community through their singing.

In other news ......

A special mention to Lily for her fabulous achievements in singing outside the college. As well as a full commitment to the Schola, she somehow manages to fit in weekly rehearsals with Opera North and last week was awarded the 'Singing Cup' for best singing performance over a 2-day cometition. Lily is too modest to shout about her achievements, so we're very happy to do it on her behalf. Our girls continue to commit strongly to the college's Hockey endeavours, both at Junior and Senior level. Antonia (below right) trains weekly with Harrogate Hockey club, making the most of the opportunity to develop her skill externally.

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.

Dear Parents, Yr 13 Bede's girls (Amber, Anastasia Wu and Margaret) represented the House beautifully in the solemn and reverent Remembrance Day Service which was led by our very own Major Dennis, Yr 12 Tutor extraordinaire. Yr 11s have been preparing for the Options Fair tomorrow, and we are looking forward to seeing some Parents too. Yr 9s and 10s have been focussing on Classroom expectations and Prep. All the girls are excited to have a rest over Exeat and to prepare for the social activities during Advent. The Sunday trip Bede's to the German Christmas Markets is creating some excitement, so is the Christmas Saturday Night social to St Dunstan's and St Oswald's and the Christmas Dinner with St Hugh's House. Schola girls will be travelling to London for their Concert.

11th of Nov 2024: We Remember

Dr Pomroy, our Year 13 tutor, took Sophia Whatley representing Bede's to London to the 42nd annual MUN competition.

Our wonderful Lucy Barret (OA24) from last year has decided to join the Marian Franciscans in Dundee and made her first committment during the month of October. She will be joined by her sister Anna over exeat, we look forward supporting her over the coming months.

A Busy Week in a Busy Term

Trial examinations, fixtures, academic work, parents' days and the usual raft of opportunities at Ampleforth College have all added to the busiest week we have enjoyed so far this term. It started last weekend with the lovely Year 9 Parents' weekend and it was great to meet up with parents and celebrate the successes that the boys have already enjoyed, not least the win against Stonyhurst on the Saturday! This week has seen the other end of the house, Year 13, completing their first round of Trial Examinations and the other boys have been thoughtful and supportive of this. This signifies the beginning of the process of preparation towards the summer, a somewhat sobering thought before Christmas. The homely feel of the house cannot be allowed to be missed during such times and pizza making on Tuesday, a fun quiz on Thursday and lots of games of pool and table tennis have meant the hum of a busy, happy house has continued.
Remembrance Day was poignant and thought-provoking. Mass in house and on a Sunday in the Abbey Church all add to the rounded, all-encompassing life here at a bust boarding school. One that helps our boys thrive, grow and develop into impressive young men. Exeat next weekend will see a welcome respite before the final push to Christmas, please do complete the form on the weekly update if you haven't done so already. I look forward to seeing you all throughout the festive period.

Message from the Housemaster

Dear parents, With Exeat in sight and the Upper Sixth Mock examinations behind us, we breath a little sigh of relief. It was lovely to see so many parents of our Year 9 boys at the weekend, and Sunday Mass felt very special. It seems that our First Years have jelled very well indeed. When one of them was asked by his father who his friends were, he responded: "Well, all of them!" Nice...

Sporting Success

On Saturday, Ampleforth College faced their nemesis, Stonyhurst College. It was down to our mighty U14As to defend our honour by beating a physically superior side. Well done, all of them...

Message from the Housemaster

Dear Parents, We have had a really great week in House. Mrs Graham's fantastic initiative, Courage Week, has seen the best come out of pupils and staff alike. From superb presentations on discoveries, to demonstrations of extreme resilience, particularly on the rugby field, I have been entertained, impressed, and made incredibly proud by all that I have seen.

Last Friday night's pamper evening was a hit with those that took on the herbal tea-tasting, treat-making and natural facemasks. There were victories for both the boys and girls on Saturday against Aysgarth and Mowden Hall and there was just enough energy left to enjoy a cinema trip to Malton to watch the latest Paddington movie. It was excellent and I definitely did not cry at the end! Chaplaincy activity continues to go from strength to strength with Mrs Baker's lunchtime club preparing our pupils for the many endeavours that they can make on behalf of others. A great example of this was Achille, Freddy and Jacques volunteering to join Mr Goddard in leading the Children's Liturgy at the Ampleforth Village Mass on Sunday morning. This has become a regular trip for our students and it is lovely to feel a part of the community. My thanks to the parishioners and Fr Kentigern for being so welcoming. Good luck to all for the sports fixtures today and tomorrow, as well as those in music ensembles performing in the St Cecilia Concert on Sunday afternoon. We are looking forward to supporting Miss McKell and her musicians. Sebastian Phillips
