Studio Ghibli was founded by Hayao Miyazaki (animator, producer, screenwriter, author and manga artist), the japanese film director Isao Takahata and the producer Toshio Suzuki.
Created under the need of "bringing new life to the anime industry"
Ghibli refers to the italian word for "hot wind from the Sahara". The name also refers to Miyasaki's love for airplanes, as we can see in "The wind rises"

Created under the need of "bringing new life to the anime industry"
Ghibli refers to the italian word for "hot wind from the Sahara". The name also refers to Miyasaki's love for airplanes, as we can see in "The wind rises"
The creators just wanted to use their art to "explore the depths of the human experience and tell poetic and emotional stories."
Devoid of traditional villains, even Ghibli's "bad guys" are, in some way, likable.

The Studio Ghibli Ability
The film was only moderately successful at the Japanese box office, as it was cataloged as too strong for younger audiences. Nonetheless, Grave of the Fireflies eventually received the critical attention it deserved, showing one more time the studio's ability, it can express the reallity in a unique, poetic and dramatic way, all in once
"Grave of the fireflies"
One of the studio's deepest and most beautiful works, this film is based on Akiyuki Nosaka's harrowing semi-autobiographical short story about two boys struggling to survive during World War II.
What´s next for Studio Ghibli?
Although Miyazaki announced his retirement in 2013, he will not stop
In May 2020, Suzuki (who is now the main producer at Studio Ghibli) announced that 60 animators are currently working on the film ("How do you live?). “We're still drawing everything by hand, but it takes us longer to complete a movie because we must draw more frames,”
If you want to know more about the history of Studio Ghibli (and you live in Japan) you should visit the Ghibli Museum, located in Mitaka, Tokyo. And if you're feeling inspired to check out one of the studio's classics, you can now watch Spirited Away, Howling Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, and many more Ghibli movies on Netflix.
