Global Issue Interactive Presentation

Objective: Students will be able to recognize and distinguish the difference between explicit and implicit biases, with the understanding of how racism can influence one's behavior and choices.

What is racism, explicit, and implicit Bias?

Racism is when individuals are mistreated based on their race or ethnicity. Problem: The problem with racism is that it harms others and prevents us from collaborating to create a better society, instead fostering hostility. Solution: We can fix this by learning from one another and fostering mutual understanding.
Explicit bias involves conscious and openly expressed prejudices or preferences for certain individuals or groups, with people being aware of their attitudes and beliefs. Problem: This kind of bias is damaging and can lead to unfair treatment of others. Solution: The remedy for explicit bias is to reflect on our feelings and to embrace learning about different cultures with an open mind.

What is explicit bias?

Implicit bias refers to the unconscious beliefs, attitudes, and stereotypes that shape how we perceive and interact with others. Problem: This can result in unequal treatment when we remain unaware of it. Solution: To address this issue, we must actively confront and examine our own biases.
