O Velho que Lia Romances de Amor conta a estória de António José Bolivar Proaño, um homem casado que vive numa aldeia serrana e que se vê obrigado a partir desta com a sua esposa para uma encosta da floresta, pois a sua esposa não podia ter filhos. Passados alguns anos de amargura, numa terra que não produzia nada por mais que tentassem, a sua companheira morre com a malária e este vê-se, mais tarde, na sua profunda tristeza, a ser mordido por uma serpente e a ser salvo por um shuar que o leva para a sua aldeia e após uns dias este recupera totalmente. Aí, decide viver com eles e ser como eles, tornando-se, rapidamente, num destemido caçador, contudo um dia um pesquisador de ouro mata o seu compadre shuar Nushiño e este acaba por o perseguir e o matar como mandam as leis dos shuar, todavia este mata-o com uma espingarda e acaba por ser expulso da aldeia, pois a batalha não tinha sido justa.
