What is matter?

Matter is any substance that has mass and takes up space by having a volume.

Everything that can be seen and touched is called matter. All matter on Earth exists in three forms: solid, liquid, or gas.

Solids, liquids, and gases are made of extremely tiny particles called atoms and molecules.

Scientific Models: Scientists use models to understand the behavior of atoms and molecules and explain the properties of matter.

  • On a piece of paper, draw particle diagrams for solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Write down a sentence to describe each state.

States of matter

States of matter

  • Particles in a gas are well separated with no regular pattern.
  • Particles in a gas vibrate freely at high speeds.
  • Gasses assume the shapes of their containers.
Gas
Solid
  • Particles in a solid are tightly packed and usually in a regular pattern
  • Particles in a solid will vibrate but cannot move past each other.
  • Solids retain their shapes
Liquid
  • Particles in a liquid are close together with no regular pattern.
  • Particles in a liquid flow and can easily move or slide past one another.
  • Liquids assume the shape of their containers.
