Your Responsiblities
As a babysitter, you are a substitute parent, while the real parents are away or not availabe. Some of the roles and responsibilities a good babysitter must fulfill are:
Be Dependable- Arrive a little early and get to know the children. This allows the children time to adjust to their parents leaving. It also gives you time to have things under control before the parents go out the door. Do not have friends over when you are babysitting for a family. Having a friend over is not appropriate. You need to give full attention to your job and not visit with your friends. Ensuring Child Safety- This is the most important responsibility, and it's always required. You need to make the child's safety your number one priority. Parents expect that children will be under the watchful eye of the sitter at all time. You should be able to see the children at all times. If they are napping, there may be a baby monitor or you can check on them periodically. If they are allowed to go outside, go with them and watch them at all times. Learn Expectations- Listen to the instructions of the parents before they leave. If they would like you to give the child lunch and a nap, do what they ask. They may tell you to not allow the child to watch TV and follow other rules fo the household. If they would like you to wash the dishes when the child goes to bed, you should try to wash the dishes.
