View the poster and AI simulation of a California town during the Gold Rush.

  1. What do you think the Gold Rush was?
  2. Why would people at the time be interested in the Gold Rush?
  3. How do you think it impacted the West of the United States?

ORES are valuable materials found in rocks that contain useful minerals.

Before you click each ORE below, can you correctly guess which mineral it contains?

Next

Minerals can form in different ways. Large amounts of minerals are ORE DEPOSITS and can be used profitably.

Become a Geologist

Geologists are scientists that study the Earth's physical structure and identify the locations of ore deposits. They search for volcanic activity and specific rocks to find the size and location of deposits. Choose an activity to practice your skills as a geologist!

Did you finish your activity early? Check out your classmates' geodes!

Let's visit a Pennsylvania coal mine. Click the yellow wagon to get started. What do you notice? What do you wonder?

Next

MINING is digging into the Earth to extract resources. Click the mine cart to learn more about underground coal extraction.

Next

Mining is essential to extracting minerals needed for every day life. They are extracted differently depending on where they are found.

Next

Once ores leave the mine, they must be REFINED to remove unwanted substances. Explore three refinement processes to learn more.

Next

Mining for minerals provides us materials needed to make synthetic products like cell phones, computers, cars, and fuel.

Imagine that you are traveling down a Pennsylvania road and you see the sign. What would you think?

Next

RISKY HISTORY

Toxic gases, possible cave-ins, suffocation, explostions, and heavy manual machinery made working in the mines a dangerous job. Many miners got lung disease: black lung

Next

Let's visit a modern mine. Are modern mines safer than mines in the 1800s and 1900s?

Next

Should the United States design a plan to phase out coal power? Why or why not?

Next

You survived the mines!

Be extra safe by turning your lesson in blank now! Don't forget!

Good News! In 1905, Pennsylvania BANNED child labor in the mines. Therefore, you must leave the mine for your safety!

You're just in time to start your shift at the mine! Don't worry too much about labor laws. In 1901, children 8 years and older can work in the mines! In Pennsylvania, we have an abundance of Anthracite Coal waiting to be extracted! Once you learn about mining, I'm sure we can find the right job for you!

ALUMINUM

Aluminum is extracted from the ore Bauxite. It is the most abundant mineral in Earth's crust.

COPPER

Copper is extracted from the ore Chalcopyrite. Copper ore is often found in volcanic areas.

SILVER

Silver is extracted from the ore Argentite. It has the highest electrical conductivity.

The mine is a hazardous place! Put on your hard hat and read the rules to make sure you are being safe!

  1. Show up for your shift on time.
  2. Respect your co-workers.
  3. Have on-topic discussions.
  4. Help your co-workers and supervisor.
  5. Ask the mining supervisor for help.
Task #1

DISCUSS WITH YOUR GROUP: What is each map trying to show us? Return to the main room once you have an answer.

Task #2

DISCUSS WITH YOUR GROUP: How did copper most likely form in the locations on map #1? Be specific! Return to the main room once you have an answer.

ANTHRACITE COAL FORMATION
  • Coal formed in PA about 300 million years ago!
  • As the Appalachian Mountains formed, heat and pressure from mountain building made Anthracite Coal.
  • In the late 1700s, the coal was discovered in PA, kicking off PA's steel industry.
The Industrial Revolution took place during the 1800s. How did the invention of new technology change the United States coal industry?
