Definition:
Endometriosis is a gynecological disease that often causes chronic pelvic pain or severe cramps during menstruation.
Small fragments of the uterine mucosa (endometrium) that come off during menstruation may be transported up through the fallopian tubes to the ovaries into the uterine cavity, instead of being excreted by the vagina and expelled out of the body with the period.
- this blood contains fragments of the uterine mucosa, which instead of being destroyed by the immune system will implant
- During menstruation, under the effect of uterine contractions, some blood is regurgitated in the tubes to arrive in the abdominal-pelvic cavity
-this tissue will be influenced by hormonal changes during each subsequent menstrual cycle.
- Development of uterine mucosa-like tissue outside the uterus.
