La storia del muro tra Israele e Cisgiordania è strettamente legata al conflitto israeliano-palestinese. Definito dagli israeliani “chiusura di sicurezza” o “barriera anti-terrorista” e dai palestinesi “muro dell’apartheid” o “muro della vergogna”, questo sistema di barriere fisiche fu costruito a partire da giugno 2002 per volere del Consiglio dei ministri israeliano, in seguito all’avvio della seconda intifada nel 2000, con cui i palestinesi avevano cercato di ribellarsi all’occupazione israeliana.

Le Peace Lines di Belfast

Le cosiddette Peace Lines o Peace Walls sono una serie di muri costruiti in Irlanda del Nord per separare le comunità cattoliche da quelle protestanti. Queste barriere di cemento, mattoni e filo spinato si trovano soprattutto nelle città di Belfast, Derry, Portadown e Lurgan; raggiungono una lunghezza massima di cinque chilometri e un’altezza di otto metri e sono sorvegliate dalla polizia. Ci sono dei cancelli che consentono il passaggio da una zona all’altra solo durante il giorno, mentre di notte rimangono chiusi.

Il muro del Messico

La barriera di separazione tra Stati Uniti d'America e Messico, detta anche muro messicano o muro di Tijuana, è una barriera di sicurezza costruita dagli Stati Uniti lungo la frontiera al confine tra USA e Messico, costruita dal 1993 in poi. Talvolta in Messico e nei media viene però chiamato muro della vergogna.

Il confine tra le due coree

Una delle più famose divisioni nel continente asiatico è sicuramente quella tra Corea del Nord e Corea del Sud, legata ancora alle dinamiche della Guerra Fredda.Anche se non si trova un vero e proprio muro, il confine è segnato dalla cosiddetta linea di demarcazione militare o linea dell’armistizio che si estende lungo il 38° parallelo e per 250 chilometri.

I muri di confine dell'India

Le frontiere indiane sono segnate da diverse barriere, costruite principalmente per contenere le migrazioni e rafforzare il confine in zone che hanno visto aspri conflitti negli ultimi anni.Un muro di mattoni e una rete metallica, sormontata da filo spinato, corrono lungo la frontiera con il Bangladesh per più di quattromila chilometri.

La linea verde di Cipro

Dopo la nascita nel 1960 della nuova Repubblica di Cipro, ex colonia inglese, le tensioni tra la comunità greca e quella turca si inasprirono sempre di più. Nel 1964 le Nazioni Unite decisero perciò di inviare un contingente di pace in aiuto alle forze britanniche guidate dal generale Peter Young, famoso per aver tracciato con una matita verde sulla cartina della capitale Nicosia una linea che stabiliva una zona cuscinetto di cessate il fuoco tra i quartieri a prevalenza turca e quelli a maggioranza greca. Era la cosiddetta “linea verde” che in un primo momento divise solo la città di Nicosia e poi l’intera isola. Nel 1974 Cipro fu divisa in due: a nord la Repubblica Turca e a sud la Repubblica di Cipro.

Il muro di Berlino

Il muro di Berlino fu costruito per fermare l'emigrazione dalla Germania Est alla Germania Ovest durante la Guerra Fredda, dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale

Da circa mezzo millennio le città di Ceuta e Melilla sono due exclave spagnole in territorio marocchino e sono l’unica zona di confine terrestre tra Europa e Africa. La prima si trova sullo stretto di Gibilterra, mentre la seconda è sul litorale orientale. Per bloccare l’immigrazione illegale, negli anni ’90 vennero costruite delle barriere di filo spinato che isolano le città dal territorio marocchino, trasformandole in zone di frontiera, delimitate da un lato dal mare e dall’altro dalle recinzioni.

Anche in Italia si può ricordare il caso di un muro che per quasi sessant’anni ha diviso una città in due: il muro di Gorizia, centro friulano sull’attuale confine con la Slovenia.

La barriera che rinchiude la favela brasiliana

Nel maggio del 2016 venne costruito nella zona orientale dello stato brasiliano di São Paulo un muro di calcestruzzo alto tre metri e lungo un chilometro. La barriera si estende sul chilometro 58 dell’autostrada “dos Imigrantes” che unisce la città di São Paulo alla costa atlantica e la sua costruzione è costata più di tre milioni di euro.
