Climate change
Climate change is the global warming of the Earth caused primarily by human activities, such as the use of fossil fuels and deforestation. Higher temperatures are affecting our climate and environment.
What is Climate Change?
Many of our activities, such as driving cars, factories and agriculture, release heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere. These gases are called "greenhouse gases".
What causes Climate Change?
Imagine a greenhouse: the glass lets sunlight in, but prevents heat from escaping. Similarly, greenhouse gases trap heat near Earth, preventing it from escaping into space.
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
When there are too many greenhouse gases, the Earth warms too much. This leads to phenomena such as:
- Higher temperatures
- Melting of ice
- Major extreme weather events (such as hurricanes and droughts)
What happens when the greenhouse effect increases?
The main greenhouse gases are:
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂): It is released by the combustion of coal, oil and gas.
- Methane (CH₄): Comes from farms, landfills and natural gas fields.
- Nitrogen oxide (N₂O): Derived from fertilizers and agricultural practices.
The Most Common Greenhouse Gases
Here are some of the effects we can notice:
- Higher temperatures: Hotter summers, milder winters.
- Change in seasons: Plants and animals no longer know when is the right time to grow or migrate.
- Natural disasters: Hurricanes, fires and floods are increasingly frequent.
The Effects of Climate Change on Daily Life
Here are some things we can do to help our planet:
- Save energy: Turn off the lights and use less heating.
- Use public transport or cycle.
- More plants: Plants absorb carbon dioxide and give us oxygen.
- Use renewable energy: Sun, wind and water are energy sources that do not pollute
What Can We Do to Stop Climate Change?
Climate change is a big challenge, but each of us can make a difference. If we work together, we can protect our planet and our future.
