THIRD CONDITIONAL
- We use the Third Conditional to describe imaginary situations in the past.
- We talk about a condition in the past that did not happen, that is why there is no possibility for this condition.
HOW DO WE FORM IT?
The third conditional is formed by: IF + PAST PERFECT (CONDITION) + WOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE (RESULT) If I had won the lottery I would have bought a new house WOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE (RESULT) + IF + PAST PERFECT (CONDITION) I would have bought a new house if I had won the lottery It is normal to use should have, could have, might have instead of would have.
Examples:
IF + PAST PERFECT (CONDITION) + WOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE (RESULT) If Natalia had been free yesterday I would have invited her If they had not passed their exam their teacher would have been sad If we had taken a taxi We would not have missed the flight If I had moved to Oaxaca I would have lived near the beach If he hadn't had a passport he wouldn't have traveled I would have gone If you had told me We would have come If we had been invited He would have been rich by now If he had become a musician My parents wouldn't have bought the house If they hadn't had the money Sally wouldn't have been so upset If she had passed the driving test
