Mitochondria

  • Mitochondria are referred to as the powerhouse of the cell and their primary function is to produce energy for the cell and store it in the form of ATP through a process known as cellular respiration. Cellular respiration has three stages; Glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and Electron Transport Chain.
  • Mitochondria are found in eukaryotic cells in both plants and animal cells as they both perform cellular respiration.
  • Mitochondria are like the batteries in a TV remote as they provide energy allowing the remote to function

Nucleolus

  • The nucleolus is a sub-structure located in the nucleus and its primary function is the production and assembly of ribosomes. It synthesizes ribosomal RNA and combines it with protein to form ribosomal subunits.
  • The nucleolus is found in Eukaryotic cells only and can be found in both animal and plant cells. It is not found in prokaryotic cells because they lack a nucleus.
  • The nucleolus is like a factory in town as they both produce important products for the people, in this case the production of ribosomes which are essential for building proteins.

Ribosomes

  • Ribosomes play a crucial role in the cell serving as the site of protein synthesis. Ribosomes read the messenger RNA sequences and translate them into amino acid sequences which are linked together to form polypeptide chains which then fold into proteins.
  • Ribosomes are found in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. In prokaryotic cells they are found in cytoplasm and in eukaryotic cells they are found in the cytoplasm and ER. They are present in both plant and animal eukaryotic cells.
  • Ribosomes are like the chefs in a restaurant, just as chefs make meals with recipes ribosomes assemble amino acids to make proteins with instructions from the mRNA.

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

  • The Smooth ER is responsible for the synthesis of lipids, including phospholipids and cholesterol, it also helps detoxify harmful substances in the liver cells and serves as a storage site for calcium ions.
  • Smooth ER is present in only Eukaryotic cells as prokaryotic cells lack membrane bound organelles and the smooth ER can be found in both plant and animal cells.
  • The smooth ER is like a warehouse, just as a warehouse stores and processes goods, the smooth ER stores calcium ions and lipids for the cell.

Golgi Apparatus

  • The Golgi Apparatus modifies proteins received from the endoplasmic reticulum and sorts and packages these proteins and lipids into secretory vesicles which it creates for transport. It is also involved in the formation of lysosomes along with the ER.
  • The Golgi Apparatus is present in only Eukaryotic cells in both plant and animal cells, it is not in prokaryotic cells because they lack membrane bound organelles.
  • The Golgi Apparatus is like a post office, just as the post office sorts and ships packages, the golgi apparatus sorts and packages proteins and lipids for transport.

Cytoplasm

  • The cytoplasm is a gel-like substance that provides shape and support to the cell suspending the organelles in place and storing various substances like nutrients within it.
  • The cytoplasm is present in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells in both plant and animal cells.
  • The cytoplasm is like the ocean surrounding an island, just as the ocean allows boats and animals to float around it, the cytoplasm fills the space within a cell allowing the organelles to float and function.

Cell (plasma) membrane

  • The cell membrane acts as a barrier and provides protection for the internal environment of the cell and also controls what enters and exits the cell, allowing some substances to pass while blocking others.
  • The cell membrane is present in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells in both plant and animal cells.
  • The cell membrane is like the security gate at the front of a community, just as the gate protects the houses and only allows residents to enter and exit the cell membrane only allows certain substances to enter and exit while protecting the inside.

Nucleus

  • The nucleus is the control center of the cell and it houses the cells genetic material or its DNA which contain the instructions for the development of the organism. It also controls the expression of genes to determine which proteins are produced and when they are produced and coordinates various cellular activities.
  • The nucleus is present in only eukaryotic cells in both plant and animal cells which require the nucleus as a control center. It is not present in prokaryotic cells lack membrane bound organelles
  • The nucleus is like the CEO of a company, just as the CEO makes critical decisions and oversees the company the nucleus controls the cells activities and holds the DNA blueprints.

Vacuole

Plant vacuole

  • The vacuoles primary function is to serve as a storage unit for various substances like nutrients, waste products, and water, they also help maintain turgor pressure in plant cells making sure the plant maintains its structure and rigidity. Vacuoles also contribute to cell growth as they expand by taking in water which enlargens the cell without the need for more cytoplasm.

Animal vacuole

  • Vacuoles are found in only eukaryotic cells as prokaryotic cells lack membrane bound organelles. Vacuoles are found in both plant and animals cells, being more prominent and large in plant cells while smaller and less prominent in animal cells.
  • The vacuole is just like a water tower in a city, just as the water tower stores water for the community and provides pressure for drinking and irrigation, the vacuole stores water and other substances for the cell.

Lysosome

  • The lysosome is like the digestive system of the cell its primary function is to break down macromolecules like proteins, lipids, and carbs into smaller components in preparation for cellular metabolism. They also act as the cells waste disposal system breaking down and recycling cellular debris, damaged organelles, and other waste products helping maintain homeostasis.
  • Lysosomes are found in eukaryotic cells and only in animal cells serving as the waste disposal. They are not found in plant cells as plants have vacuoles that can perform similar functions meaning they don't need lysosomes.
  • Lysosomes are like waste facilities in a city, just as waste facilities collect and dispose of garbage, lysosomes break down and recycle cellular waste.

Cytoskeleton

  • The cytoskeleton provides the cell with shape and support helping it maintain its integrity. It also helps with cell movement, enabling movement through structures during cell division and acting as a track for the transport of organelles and vesicles. The cytoskeleton also helps with cell division during mitosis as it forms the mitotic spindle.
  • The cytoskeleton is found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and can be in plant or animal cells, however it is less complex in prokaryotic cells.
  • The cytoskeleton is like the frame of a house, just as the frame provides support and shape to the house the cytoskeleton gives the cell its shape and provides it with support.

Cell Wall

  • The cell wall provides rigidity and strength to the cell, helping it maintain its shape and withstand internal pressure like from vacuole expansion. It also provides the cell with protection from pathogens and environmental factors, safeguarding the internal environment of the cell. Furthermore, it works with the vacuole in plant cells to maintain turgor pressure.
  • The cell wall is found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, however it is only found in plant cells where it is composed of cellulose and not found in animal cells.
  • The cell wall is like the fence around your backyard, just as the fence protects the inside of your property and the house, the cell wall protects the internal environment of the cell.

Chloroplast

  • The primary function of the chloroplasts is to carry out photosynthesis, the process of converting light energy to chemical energy producing glucose and oxygen, they also store excess glucose in the form of starch for later use. Through photosynthesis, chloroplasts synthesize organic compounds like amino acids which are need for the growth of plants.
  • Chloroplasts are present in only eukaryotic cells and can only be found in plant cells as animals do not perform photosynthesis meaning they don't need chloroplasts.
  • A chloroplast is like a solar panel on a house as a solar panel can capture sunlight and convert it into energy similar to how a chloroplast performs photosynthesis to produce glucose and oxygen.

  • The Rough ER is covered with ribosomes on its surface and its primary function is to perform protein synthesis and transportation which begins in the ribosomes which synthesize protein and send them to the lumen of the rough ER which folds and modifies them to make sure they function properly. The rough ER makes sure only the properly folded proteins are sent to the vesicles for transport.

Rough ER

  • The Rough ER is found in only eukaryotic cells and is present in both plant and animal cells where it is needed for protein synthesis.
