The 1921 agreement

Consequences of the civil war (1922)
The treaty splits the independence movement. Those who accept it form the government of the new free state, while opponents, considering it to be a betrayal of the republican ideal, trigger the Irish Civil War (1922-1923). In 1922, the War of Independence ended but Ireland remained divided, with the six northern counties forming Northern Ireland, still attached to the UK. However, divisions on the Northern Ireland issue persist, fueling tensions for decades.
