THE PILGRIMS FATHERS
A thanksgiving presentation
WHAT IS THANKSGIVING?
Introduction
Today we celebrate one of the most beloved celebrations in North American culture—Thanksgiving. It´s beginning goes back to 1621, when the pilgrims, a group of European settlers who arrived in America on the ship Mayflower, celebrated a party for a native American tribe as a sign of gratitude for their first harvest. Nowdays, it is a tradition declared by President Abraham Lincoln that brings families together for a dinner to be thankful.
WHO WERE THE PILGRIM FATHERS?
The Pilgrim Fathers were a group of English religious separatists who, in 1620, arrived in America aboard the ship Mayflower. They settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and are known for founding one of the first colonies in the New World. They signed the Mayflower Compact, a self-government agreement, and are remembered for their participation in the first Thanksgiving in 1621.
WHY DID THEY EMIGRATE?
The Pilgrim Fathers emigrated because they sought religious freedom. They were Puritan separatists who wanted to separate from the Church of England, as they believed its religious practices were corrupt and could not be reformed. After living in the Netherlands and facing economic and cultural difficulties, they decided to emigrate to America to practice their faith freely.
The Mayflower and the Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower was the ship that took the Pilgrims to America in 1620, marking the beginning of a new colony and a self-government arrangement: the Mayflower Compact.
The Mayflower Voyage
The Mayflower left Plymouth, England, in September 1620 with 102 people on board. The journey took 66 days and was very difficult because of bad weather and overcrowding, causing illness and hunger. They planned to arrive in Virginia, but storms changed their route, and they reached Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In December 1620, after exploring the area, they founded Plymouth Colony.
The Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower Compact was an agreement made by the people on the Mayflower on November 11, 1620, when they arrived at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, instead of Virginia. They needed rules to live peacefully because they were outside English law. The compact promised to stay loyal to the king and to make fair laws for everyone. It was signed by 41 men and is seen as the first step toward self-government in America.
THEIR FIRST YEARS IN PLYMOUTH
The Pilgrim Fathers partnered with financial investors. The Mayflower arrived in New England on November 11, 1620, after a 66-day journey. Initially, the colonists lived aboard the ship while constructing their settlement, and many died, with only 52 surviving the first year. In March 1621, the Pilgrims formed a mutual protection treaty with the Wampanoag leader, Ousamequin (Massasoit). . A Wampanoag man, Squanto, helped the settlers grow corn and adapt to the new environment. That fall, the Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest with a three-day feast . + Over the next six years, more settlers arrived, families reunited, and the Plymouth Colony grew stable and prosperous, reaching a population of about 160 by 1627.

Symbolic and cultural influence
The pilgrim fathers left a lasting big mark in democratic principles, the religious freedoom and the colonization make an important part in the historic and cultural identity of the United States.
Initial relationship with native tribes
Although relations between European settlers and indigenous people eventually deteriorated in American history, the Pilgrim Fathers initially worked with the Wampanoag, who taught them how to grow corn and survive in the new environment. This moment of collaboration is remembered in the tradition of Thanksgiving.
Playmouth's fundation
the pilgrim fathers established Playmouth's colony, where today is Massachusetts, being one of the first permanent british colonies in North America.
Thanksgiving day and cultural impact
The first Thanksgiving, celebrated with the Wampanoag, was a symbolic event of gratitude. Although the modern holiday was instituted years later, it is associated with pilgrim fathers. This event reflects values of unity and gratitude, but over time it has also generated discussions about how the relationship between settlers and indigenous people has been told too simply.
Contribution for economy from colonies
The Pilgrim Fathers, while initially facing economic hardship, established agricultural and trade practices that contributed to the New England economic model. They introduced crops learned from the indigenous people, such as corn, and developed a mixed economy of agriculture, fishing, and trade.
