Style

Set in Scotland and inspired by the life of a king, it is the story of a nobleman who murders his sovereign, his guest, after winning a battle. Together with his wife, he plots a rise to power following a prophecy revealed by a group of witches. The plan, unsurprisingly, is doomed to failure: the wife goes mad, and Macbeth dies in a duel.

Symbolism • Symbol of impiety: Represents an immoral woman, contrasting with the feminine virtues of the time. • Madness: Her guilt leads to insanity, symbolizing female hysteria.
