THESIS

Dreams as a way of trauma release/expression

Dreams are a phenomenon that I believe are a form of self-release: enabling us to release supressed thoughts, regulate emotions and heal from trauma.

Dreams as a way of emotional expression
Dreams as a way of wish fulfillment/suppressed thought expression

How I got here

It started with...

What do dreams mean to me?

My original idea (dreams = dump)

Where my google search took me:

Google scholar/library search

THE BIG IDEAS

So instead I thought HOW that self-expression might look:

How are dreams a form of self-expression?

I started with this search...and got nothing.

Dreams as desire expression: Dream rebound
Dreams as trauma expression: Dreams to heal
Ultimately, dreams are like brain residue, or as stated by Revonsuo, (2000) 'dream content is consistently and powerfully modulated by certain types of waking experiences'
Dreams as emotional expression: Dreams to regulate emotions

DREAMS TO HEAL

Healing in lucid dreams for people suffering from trauma, e.g. PTSD. 'this unique form of dreaming may be useful for promoting healing due to the lucid dreamer’s capacity for goal-directed action in the dream.'

According to Black et al, (2014), 'dreams including a deceased loved one can help them overcome the areas of complication and help them adjust to loss.'

Yount et al, (2023)
Black et al, (2014)

DREAM REBOUND

Initially theorised by Freud in 1915 as repression in dreams, Wegner, (2004) developed this idea into 'suppressing thoughts' that appear in dreams, acting as a form of wish fulfillment or 'intrusions' in a person's dream state.

DREAMS TO REGULATE EMOTIONS

This was a little more complicated to fit in, however...

The relationship between memories, stress, emotional regulation (particularly hormone cortisol which affects emotions) and dreams/sleep. According to Payne and Nadel, (2004).

Somewhat relevant, but I think this point will be tweaked a bit to fit with the others!

SUMMARY

Point 1

Point 2

Point 3

All my 3 main points will link into my thesis statement of how dreams are a form of self-release/expression from research already found and stated as well as more I find as I continue the writing process.

I'll begin the focus on Wegner, (2004) dream rebound theory. From here, I'll then link the concepts of thoughts/feelings in dreams to emotional regulation and healing.

My essay will explore how dreams poses as a means of self-release and the theories that support my idea.
