Course overview

Participants will gain an understanding of the historical, social and cultural aspects of Nahua Culture. They will also develop basic communicative competence in Nahuatl language in order to participate in simple interactions with native speakers from a Nahua community of the Huasteca region in Hidalgo, Mexico.

Dates

This special course is divided in 9 modules. Eight of them will take place on campus. The last module is a trip in which students will spend time in both Mexico City and Huautla in order to practice what was learned. Closing reflection will be held on July 18th on campus at ITESO.

About the instructor

Octavio Domínguez Rosas is a distinguished advocate of the Nahua language and culture, as well as a defender of indigenous rights. He is originally from Los Puentes, an indigenous community in Hidalgo. His native language, Nahuatl, has been the foundation of his career as a researcher, writer, translator and collaborator in both grammar and phonology studies. He has also participated as a professor, lecturer and panelist in various institutions and is the founder of projects and civil associations such as Comunidad Tochan and the company Nauan, dedicated to artisanal work with indigenous identity. They both work to preserve and promote indigenous culture. Certified in the Accusatory Criminal System, he has worked as an interpreter and human rights expert. Currently, he continues to strengthen the Nahua language and culture through events, workshops and community activities.
