Phonological Awareness
The First Three Steps Click through the following slides to see the beginning steps of phonological awareness in young learners.
Step 1: Recognize and Manipulate Segments of Sound (syllables, onset-rime)
Syllable Segmentation
Breaking words into syllables, like clapping for each part of "happy."
Onset-Rime Manipulation
Identifying and changing the beginning sound of a word, like saying "cat" and then changing it to "hat."
Step 2: Identify Letter-Sound Relationships
Letter Recognition
Children learn to recognize letters, their shapes, and how they look in print.
Sound-Letter Correspondence
Understanding that letters make specific sounds and vice versa, such as "a" for the "ah" sound.
Phoneme Isolation
Identifying the individual sounds within a word and matching them to their corresponding letters.
Step 3: Link Letter-Sound Relationships with Phonemes
Blending
Combining individual sounds to form words, like saying c-a-t to form "cat."
Decoding
Using letter-sound knowledge to sound out and read new words.
Segmenting
Breaking words into individual sounds, like saying "cat" and then identifying each sound: c-a-t
