USE:

We use present perfect continuous in two situations:

  • To describe the lenght of an ongoing action (present):
Example: I have been waiting for an answer from her for two weeks.
  • To describe the effect of a recent event or situation
Example: I can speak French because I've been learning French for two years

Present perfect continuous

(He estado haciendo/llevo haciendo)

STRUCTURE

AFFIRMATIVE:Subject + have /has + been + verb -ing + objects Example: She has been looking for her keys for hours NEGATIVE: Subject + haven’t /hasn’t + been + verb -ing + objects Example: We haven’t been working on the project recently

(He estado haciendo/llevo haciendo)

STRUCTURE

INTERROGATIVE(WH-) Have /Has + Subject + been + verb -ing + objects? Example: Has he been visiting his grandparents recently? What has your father been doing all morning? SHORT ANSWERS Yes, subject + have /has No, subject haven’t/hasn’t

Past perfect continuous

(Había estado haciendo/llevaba haciendo)

USE:

We use past perfect continuous to show that something started in the past and continued up until another time in the past. Example:I had been waiting for an answer from her for two weeks until she phoned me.I could speak French with my cousin Pierre last summer because I'd been learning French for two years

STRUCTURE

AFFIRMATIVE:Subject + had + been + verb -ing + objects Example: Katy had been looking for her keys for hours until she found them NEGATIVE: Subject + hadn't + been + verb -ing + objects Example: We hadn't been working on the project until John joined the team.
