Discover a wonderful world full of English surprises!!!

Summary

Foreign languages have always been complicated for me. At school I had a lot of difficulty. I had lots of home teachers to help me out. This helped me to progress over time. What's complicated for me is all the different languages that get mixed up in my head. Since I was little I've often been to Germany, so I understand and speak a bit of German. And at school, we were taught English and Spanish. My parents and I have also been to travel a lot around the world. As I love discovering the world, I'm curious about all the different cultures and languages. When I want to speak English, all these different languages mix together. I have the words I need but not in the right language. Today it's important for me to learn English. It's a universal language and it's important to know how to speak it. It's necessary in the professional world. What's more, I love travelling and discovering new cultures. Knowing how to speak English could help me discover new places and meet people from all over the world.

For this first session, I didn't really know where to start. I'm lacking in a bit of everything: speaking, writing and comprehension. So I started by looking at what was available to me, and I saw an article that explained that keeping a diary was a better way of learning a language (https://theconversation.com/tenir-un-journal-un-moyen-de-mieux-apprendre-une-langue-etrangere-164003). After that, I started designing this interactive diary. Once I'd read the article, I said to myself that the most important thing was to start with grammar, in particular the different verb tenses. This would allow me to get back into the swing of things with some revision. By mastering verb tenses, it will be easier to understand the meaning of a text. So with the help of the first video, I reviewed all the different tenses. It gave me a good reminder, by reviewing the different tense structures, but also sentence construction. I realised that I didn't master certain tenses very well, or that I was mixing them up, and that it was important for me to go over them again from time to time. To keep a record of this lesson, I made myself an index card with all the verb tenses.

After revising verbs, always with the aim of reviewing the basics, I decided to revise pronunciations in English. I can understand and read, but if my pronunciation is bad, I can have trouble making myself understood. So with the help of different resources, I practised pronouncing the different sounds. First by listening to them, then by repeating them. This allowed me to correct certain sounds that I was pronouncing incorrectly. In order to have the right pronunciations, it's important that I get my ear used to English, and that I practise more orally. All I have to do to get my ear used to English is listen to music or watch films, series or documentaries in English. By listening to pronunciations, that should naturally help me. As for oral practice, I need to read more in English, or learn a text by heart and recite it. I still have a lot of work to do to get my pronunciation right, but with time and patience it should improve.

Pronunciation - Introduction to the sounds of English

For this second session, I started by revising what I'd seen the previous week, i.e. verbs. In particular, I concentrated on the differences between the present tense, the present perfect and the past simple, using the videos provided. This gave me a better understanding of what to use and when. There's no secret, I haven't mastered all the verbs perfectly, but as I practise and do exercises, it will become natural. Now that I'd reviewed the verbs and sentence structures at the same time, it seemed important to me to learn irregular verbs. So I set myself a challenge: to learn one group of irregular verbs per week. So this week I revised group 1, the ones that are identical in the infinitive and in conjugation. I learnt the following verbs: Cost, Cut, Let, Shut, Hit, Hurt and Put. It's possible that I won't remember everything now, I'll still have to revise, but when I do I'll remember them.

Grammar - Pronunciation - Communication skills

Communication skills

Communication skills are important. They're needed for presentations or meetings, to put yourself forward and grab everyone's attention. So it's important to know these skills so you can use them to good effect in a presentation, and to develop the skills you need. When I saw this exercise, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to do it. In fact, during our last class (28/10/24) we talked about this subject and explained its importance. So I decided to do it. The exercise was simple: based on the image, I had to describe my skills and say what my strong and weak points were. Based on the skills illustrated, I'm an empathetic person who listens, with a lot of respect and a very open-mindedness. During a presentation, I know how to be clear and concise, and use picking the right medium when necessary. For me, my strong point is my human side: I'm very empathetic, respectful, a good listener and open-mindedness. Nevertheless, I lack a lot of self-confidence, and I think I could also develop my non-verbal communication skills, as well as my friendliness. By knowing my skills and my weak points, I'm able to progress and improve myself so that I'm in a good position for the future.

While on holiday this summer, I met an incredible person. I met Aina. We hit it off straight away, and she quickly became a great friend. During the week of 18 November, Aina came to visit me. I put her up for a week and showed her around the capital. It was her first time in France. Aina wanted to learn French and I wanted to learn English, so during the week we talked a lot and helped each other to learn. So I was able to speak English and she French. This enabled us both to make progress in each other's language. It wasn't easy as we didn't speak the same language, but we managed to understand each other, which is the most important thing. It was a very good exercise. During the week, we took advantage of the Christmas decorations in Paris, with the Christmas markets, the illuminations and the decorations in the department stores. Of course, we also went to see the monuments, and we went to Disney. That day, the snow came down with us, which made our day even more magical. It was an incredible week. Even though we still exchange messages a lot, I can't wait to see her again so that we can continue to create beautiful memories together.

Heatlh & medicine

After high school, my first choice was to study medicine. Even though I have some basic knowledge, it's always useful to have a refresher course, especially if I have to deal with a problem abroad. So for this session I was able to review the vocabulary with the help of the links below and then practise with the exercises. https://www.excellentesl4u.com/esl-doctors-vocabulary.html https://www.excellentesl4u.com/esl-doctors-reading-comprehension.html https://www.excellentesl4u.com/esl-doctors-listening.html https://www.excellentesl4u.com/esl-doctors-writing.html En following the order of the links, here are my results: 100%, 80%, 60%. I also did the writing exercises in the last link. This enabled me to update my knowledge.

During this session, I started by doing a bit of grammar, using some, any & co. I was able to see how they're used when talking about a person, a thought or a place. Thanks to the table below, it will be easy to revise.

Some, Any & Co

This week when I was swiping through tiktok, I discovered an account on English. This account posts one or more short videos every day on various subjects. These videos are all about vocabulary, pronunciation of words and syllables, silent letters, and how to converse or develop your dialogue. Since I discovered this account, I've decided to watch these videos every day. It allows me to make progress, without it being a crontraite, simply by taking a short time each day. What's more, it allows my ears to hear English every day, and to get used to the pronunciation and sound. Even if at the moment I'm struggling to understand all the words, especially in dialogues, I think that little by little it will help me to understand. Now I work on my English for 10 to 15 minutes every day.

Learning the theory is good, but it's not enough to make progress. To work on my listening comprehension, I decided to give myself a challenge. Watch an episode of Friends every day or two. This will allow me to get used to the language for listening comprehension but also to learn extra vocabulary that can be used in everyday life. I chose the series Friends because it's easy to understand and has vocabulary that's useful in everyday life. So it will be accessible. To begin with, I would watch the series with subtitles. That will help me get used to it. Then, from the second season onwards, I would remove the subtitles to improve my oral comprehension. I set myself the goal of watching one episode per day or one episode every two days.

Busy week with festivities. Unfortunately I didn't have time to work on my English.

Wicked

Not really feeling like working over the festive period and wanting to go to the cinema, I decided to see a film in VOSTFR. So I decided to go and see Wicked at the cinema. This film is a cinematic adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. It takes place in a colourful world that combines fantasy and musical comedy. In this universe, we follow the journey of legendary witches. In particular, we follow the story of Elphaba, a young misunderstood witch, and Glinda, the popular witch, whose paths cross at university and mark the beginning of an incredible friendship. But their friendship is about to be put to the test. Their extraordinary adventures in the Land of Oz will lead them to fulfil their destiny: Elphaba will become the Good Witch and Glinda the Wicked. It was an incredible film that I really enjoyed. A lot of work went into this film, from the music to the sets, the choreography and the outfits. One of the reasons I wanted to see this film in English was because of the musical performances. Some of them aren't captivating, but others are incredible. Ariana Grande's in particular. The actors performed their roles particularly well. The lead actresses formed an incredible, fused duo. They managed to move the audience from laughter to tears.

Entering the professional world, if one wishes to have an international career, it is important to be able to write their CV and cover letter in English. This allows us to open more doors and stand out from others. Thus, with the help of the provided documents, I have created my CV in English as well as my cover letter, following the advice given in the summarized documents below.

Writing a professional email is based on several key principles to ensure clear and effective communication. First, the subject line should be concise and accurately reflect the purpose of the message. The email should begin with an appropriate salutation, such as "Dear Mr/Mrs X" for a formal tone or "Hi [Name]" for a more informal exchange. It is essential to adopt a clear and concise structure, getting straight to the point to ensure the recipient does not miss the essential information. The choice of tone and style is crucial: a simple and professional writing style should be preferred, avoiding fancy fonts, excessive capitalization, or emoticons, while maintaining impeccable grammar to uphold a professional image. Additionally, the email closing should align with the opening, using phrases like "Yours sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by a signature that includes the sender's name, title, and contact details. Before sending, it is recommended to proofread and verify the email to avoid any errors and ensure it contains all necessary information. Lastly, sending a test email to oneself and archiving sent emails can be useful for keeping track of exchanges. A professional and well-crafted email helps convey a clear, effective message while respecting the conventions of written communication.

Today, renewable energies account for 30% of the world's energy consumption. The aim is to make photovoltaic energy the most widely used form of energy in the world by 2030.Although France is currently one of the five countries that have made the most significant energy transition, Brazil is on the verge of becoming a leader in renewable energies. Luciana's thesis looks at the energy community approach to transition. This grouping of around thirty players aims to facilitate and intensify exchanges around energy issues. These interactions make it possible to co-construct the renewable energies of tomorrow, taking into account the resources available to them. The study presented, which focuses specifically on the Minas Gerais region in Brazil, has created value by reducing energy costs through the integration of resources such as management knowledge, financing and the use of technology.

This week was a bit special because we were on the DIGIBAT project. Being a very busy week, I didn't think I'd have the opportunity to work on my English. However, during this particular week, we had a surprise visit from Luciana Oliveira Militão, a Brazilian researcher, who gave us a talk in English on photovoltaic energy, the subject of her thesis which will be published in 2025.Despite my difficulty in understanding everything at the conference, it was an opportunity to practise my comprehension skills.

This weekend, my parents surprised my sister and me. They gave us a weekend in London to practise the language. It was a short trip, but it was incredible. We got to see some of the capital and the different monuments. We saw Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and much more. As part of our tour of the city, we also took a boat and coach trip. Before heading back to France, we went on a little shopping spree. The aim was to make us panic about English, so my parents stayed behind for the whole weekend. Whenever we needed to talk, they let my sister and I manage. It was good practice. So we chatted with different people. It was an intense weekend, but we'll remember it fondly. And I hope to have the opportunity to go to England again to continue visiting this country.

Week of 3 march

It Ends With Us at Colleen Hoover

In December, I wanted to challenge myself by watching Friends to improve my English. Unfortunately, the series had disappeared from the Netflix platform, so I gave up. However, I decided to try again, so I bought the series. Friends is a cult American TV series that aired from 1994 to 2004. It follows the lives of six friends (Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe) living in New York. Mixing humor, romance, and heartfelt moments, the series explores their relationships, careers, and daily lives, often centered around a coffee shop called Central Perk. It’s a great show for learning English because the vocabulary is common, and the dialogues are clear and well-paced. The characters also have different speaking styles, which helps in getting used to various ways of speaking.

Chandler struggles with his smoking addiction, while Joey, a struggling actor, tries to boost his career. Phoebe, always eccentric, shows her generosity by giving away money she received by mistake. Rachel eventually finds a job as a waitress at Central Perk, where she tries to adapt to her new life, far from her privileged past.
