Summary
Foreign languages have always been complicated for me. At school I had a lot of difficulty. I had lots of home teachers to help me out. This helped me to progress over time. What's complicated for me is all the different languages that get mixed up in my head. Since I was little I've often been to Germany, so I understand and speak a bit of German. And at school, we were taught English and Spanish. My parents and I have also been to travel a lot around the world. As I love discovering the world, I'm curious about all the different cultures and languages. When I want to speak English, all these different languages mix together. I have the words I need but not in the right language. Today it's important for me to learn English. It's a universal language and it's important to know how to speak it. It's necessary in the professional world. What's more, I love travelling and discovering new cultures. Knowing how to speak English could help me discover new places and meet people from all over the world.

Our Second English-Only Weekend

Grammar - Verb tenses
For this first session, I didn't really know where to start. I'm lacking in a bit of everything: speaking, writing and comprehension. So I started by looking at what was available to me, and I saw an article that explained that keeping a diary was a better way of learning a language (https://theconversation.com/tenir-un-journal-un-moyen-de-mieux-apprendre-une-langue-etrangere-164003). After that, I started designing this interactive diary. Once I'd read the article, I said to myself that the most important thing was to start with grammar, in particular the different verb tenses. This would allow me to get back into the swing of things with some revision. By mastering verb tenses, it will be easier to understand the meaning of a text. So with the help of the first video, I reviewed all the different tenses. It gave me a good reminder, by reviewing the different tense structures, but also sentence construction. I realised that I didn't master certain tenses very well, or that I was mixing them up, and that it was important for me to go over them again from time to time. To keep a record of this lesson, I made myself an index card with all the verb tenses.

Pronunciation - Introduction to the sounds of English
Grammar : Present perfect or past simple, and irregular verbs
After revising verbs, always with the aim of reviewing the basics, I decided to revise pronunciations in English. I can understand and read, but if my pronunciation is bad, I can have trouble making myself understood. So with the help of different resources, I practised pronouncing the different sounds. First by listening to them, then by repeating them. This allowed me to correct certain sounds that I was pronouncing incorrectly. In order to have the right pronunciations, it's important that I get my ear used to English, and that I practise more orally. All I have to do to get my ear used to English is listen to music or watch films, series or documentaries in English. By listening to pronunciations, that should naturally help me. As for oral practice, I need to read more in English, or learn a text by heart and recite it. I still have a lot of work to do to get my pronunciation right, but with time and patience it should improve.
For this second session, I started by revising what I'd seen the previous week, i.e. verbs. In particular, I concentrated on the differences between the present tense, the present perfect and the past simple, using the videos provided. This gave me a better understanding of what to use and when. There's no secret, I haven't mastered all the verbs perfectly, but as I practise and do exercises, it will become natural. Now that I'd reviewed the verbs and sentence structures at the same time, it seemed important to me to learn irregular verbs. So I set myself a challenge: to learn one group of irregular verbs per week. So this week I revised group 1, the ones that are identical in the infinitive and in conjugation. I learnt the following verbs: Cost, Cut, Let, Shut, Hit, Hurt and Put. It's possible that I won't remember everything now, I'll still have to revise, but when I do I'll remember them.

Communication skills
Communication skills are important. They're needed for presentations or meetings, to put yourself forward and grab everyone's attention. So it's important to know these skills so you can use them to good effect in a presentation, and to develop the skills you need. When I saw this exercise, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to do it. In fact, during our last class (28/10/24) we talked about this subject and explained its importance. So I decided to do it. The exercise was simple: based on the image, I had to describe my skills and say what my strong and weak points were. Based on the skills illustrated, I'm an empathetic person who listens, with a lot of respect and a very open-mindedness. During a presentation, I know how to be clear and concise, and use picking the right medium when necessary. For me, my strong point is my human side: I'm very empathetic, respectful, a good listener and open-mindedness. Nevertheless, I lack a lot of self-confidence, and I think I could also develop my non-verbal communication skills, as well as my friendliness. By knowing my skills and my weak points, I'm able to progress and improve myself so that I'm in a good position for the future.
Week with a friend
18 november at 23 november
While on holiday this summer, I met an incredible person. I met Aina. We hit it off straight away, and she quickly became a great friend. During the week of 18 November, Aina came to visit me. I put her up for a week and showed her around the capital. It was her first time in France. Aina wanted to learn French and I wanted to learn English, so during the week we talked a lot and helped each other to learn. So I was able to speak English and she French. This enabled us both to make progress in each other's language. It wasn't easy as we didn't speak the same language, but we managed to understand each other, which is the most important thing. It was a very good exercise. During the week, we took advantage of the Christmas decorations in Paris, with the Christmas markets, the illuminations and the decorations in the department stores. Of course, we also went to see the monuments, and we went to Disney. That day, the snow came down with us, which made our day even more magical. It was an incredible week. Even though we still exchange messages a lot, I can't wait to see her again so that we can continue to create beautiful memories together.
Heatlh & medicine
25 november 1h30
After high school, my first choice was to study medicine. Even though I have some basic knowledge, it's always useful to have a refresher course, especially if I have to deal with a problem abroad. So for this session I was able to review the vocabulary with the help of the links below and then practise with the exercises. https://www.excellentesl4u.com/esl-doctors-vocabulary.html https://www.excellentesl4u.com/esl-doctors-reading-comprehension.html https://www.excellentesl4u.com/esl-doctors-listening.html https://www.excellentesl4u.com/esl-doctors-writing.html En following the order of the links, here are my results: 100%, 80%, 60%. I also did the writing exercises in the last link. This enabled me to update my knowledge.

Tiktok @beespeaker.app
During this session, I started by doing a bit of grammar, using some, any & co. I was able to see how they're used when talking about a person, a thought or a place. Thanks to the table below, it will be easy to revise.
This week when I was swiping through tiktok, I discovered an account on English. This account posts one or more short videos every day on various subjects. These videos are all about vocabulary, pronunciation of words and syllables, silent letters, and how to converse or develop your dialogue. Since I discovered this account, I've decided to watch these videos every day. It allows me to make progress, without it being a crontraite, simply by taking a short time each day. What's more, it allows my ears to hear English every day, and to get used to the pronunciation and sound. Even if at the moment I'm struggling to understand all the words, especially in dialogues, I think that little by little it will help me to understand. Now I work on my English for 10 to 15 minutes every day.

Friends
Learning the theory is good, but it's not enough to make progress. To work on my listening comprehension, I decided to give myself a challenge. Watch an episode of Friends every day or two. This will allow me to get used to the language for listening comprehension but also to learn extra vocabulary that can be used in everyday life. I chose the series Friends because it's easy to understand and has vocabulary that's useful in everyday life. So it will be accessible. To begin with, I would watch the series with subtitles. That will help me get used to it. Then, from the second season onwards, I would remove the subtitles to improve my oral comprehension. I set myself the goal of watching one episode per day or one episode every two days.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !
Busy week with festivities. Unfortunately I didn't have time to work on my English.

Wicked
Not really feeling like working over the festive period and wanting to go to the cinema, I decided to see a film in VOSTFR. So I decided to go and see Wicked at the cinema. This film is a cinematic adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. It takes place in a colourful world that combines fantasy and musical comedy. In this universe, we follow the journey of legendary witches. In particular, we follow the story of Elphaba, a young misunderstood witch, and Glinda, the popular witch, whose paths cross at university and mark the beginning of an incredible friendship. But their friendship is about to be put to the test. Their extraordinary adventures in the Land of Oz will lead them to fulfil their destiny: Elphaba will become the Good Witch and Glinda the Wicked. It was an incredible film that I really enjoyed. A lot of work went into this film, from the music to the sets, the choreography and the outfits. One of the reasons I wanted to see this film in English was because of the musical performances. Some of them aren't captivating, but others are incredible. Ariana Grande's in particular. The actors performed their roles particularly well. The lead actresses formed an incredible, fused duo. They managed to move the audience from laughter to tears.
Writing Professional E-mails
8 january 1h30
Entering the professional world, if one wishes to have an international career, it is important to be able to write their CV and cover letter in English. This allows us to open more doors and stand out from others. Thus, with the help of the provided documents, I have created my CV in English as well as my cover letter, following the advice given in the summarized documents below.
Writing a professional email is based on several key principles to ensure clear and effective communication. First, the subject line should be concise and accurately reflect the purpose of the message. The email should begin with an appropriate salutation, such as "Dear Mr/Mrs X" for a formal tone or "Hi [Name]" for a more informal exchange. It is essential to adopt a clear and concise structure, getting straight to the point to ensure the recipient does not miss the essential information. The choice of tone and style is crucial: a simple and professional writing style should be preferred, avoiding fancy fonts, excessive capitalization, or emoticons, while maintaining impeccable grammar to uphold a professional image. Additionally, the email closing should align with the opening, using phrases like "Yours sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by a signature that includes the sender's name, title, and contact details. Before sending, it is recommended to proofread and verify the email to avoid any errors and ensure it contains all necessary information. Lastly, sending a test email to oneself and archiving sent emails can be useful for keeping track of exchanges. A professional and well-crafted email helps convey a clear, effective message while respecting the conventions of written communication.

The photovoltaic energy, Luciana Oliveira Militao
This week was a bit special because we were on the DIGIBAT project. Being a very busy week, I didn't think I'd have the opportunity to work on my English. However, during this particular week, we had a surprise visit from Luciana Oliveira Militão, a Brazilian researcher, who gave us a talk in English on photovoltaic energy, the subject of her thesis which will be published in 2025.Despite my difficulty in understanding everything at the conference, it was an opportunity to practise my comprehension skills.
Today, renewable energies account for 30% of the world's energy consumption. The aim is to make photovoltaic energy the most widely used form of energy in the world by 2030.Although France is currently one of the five countries that have made the most significant energy transition, Brazil is on the verge of becoming a leader in renewable energies. Luciana's thesis looks at the energy community approach to transition. This grouping of around thirty players aims to facilitate and intensify exchanges around energy issues. These interactions make it possible to co-construct the renewable energies of tomorrow, taking into account the resources available to them. The study presented, which focuses specifically on the Minas Gerais region in Brazil, has created value by reducing energy costs through the integration of resources such as management knowledge, financing and the use of technology.
Travel to London
Weekend of 1 february at 2 february
This weekend, my parents surprised my sister and me. They gave us a weekend in London to practise the language. It was a short trip, but it was incredible. We got to see some of the capital and the different monuments. We saw Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and much more. As part of our tour of the city, we also took a boat and coach trip. Before heading back to France, we went on a little shopping spree. The aim was to make us panic about English, so my parents stayed behind for the whole weekend. Whenever we needed to talk, they let my sister and I manage. It was good practice. So we chatted with different people. It was an intense weekend, but we'll remember it fondly. And I hope to have the opportunity to go to England again to continue visiting this country.
It Ends With Us at Colleen Hoover
Week of 3 febuary
Following the class on January 27th, our teacher advised us to read in order to improve our pronunciation. Since I really enjoy reading romance novels, I decided to read the book It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover. It’s a book I have already read in French and whose movie adaptation I have seen. I thought that since I already knew the story, it might be easier for me to understand. To progress gradually, I decided to read 10 chapters per week.
Who is Colleen Hoover ?
Colleen Hoover is a bestselling American author known for her contemporary romance and emotionally intense novels. Born in 1979 in Texas, she gained recognition with her debut novel, Slammed, published in 2012. Since then, she has written numerous bestsellers, including It Ends With Us, Verity, and November 9.Her writing style is characterized by her ability to address deep and emotional themes such as domestic violence, trauma, and personal healing while keeping the narrative engaging and heartfelt. Summary of It Ends With Us
Lily Bloom, a determined young woman, moves to Boston to open her own flower shop. There, she meets Ryle Kincaid, a charming and charismatic neurosurgeon, and they begin a passionate relationship. However, Ryle has uncontrollable bursts of anger, and Lily finds herself facing a difficult dilemma when he becomes violent. At the same time, Lily reconnects with Atlas Corrigan, her teenage love and a key figure from her past. Their reunion brings back painful memories and forces her to reflect on the cycle of domestic violence, which she previously witnessed with her mother. Through her journey, Lily realizes the importance of breaking this cycle and making courageous choices to protect her future and that of her child. The novel explores powerful themes such as love, resilience, and the difficulty of leaving a toxic relationship, even when strong feelings remain.
Chapters 1-10: Meeting Ryle
Lily Bloom, a young woman who recently lost her father, moves to Boston to open a flower shop. One evening, she meets Ryle Kincaid, a charismatic neurosurgeon. They feel a strong attraction, but Ryle insists he doesn't want a serious relationship. Week of 10 febuary
Chapters 11-20: Love and Doubts
Lily and Ryle eventually start a passionate relationship. He seems perfect, but red flags begin to appear. Ryle has uncontrollable bursts of anger, and during an argument, he unintentionally hurts her. He apologizes and promises it won’t happen again. At the same time, Lily crosses paths with Atlas, now a successful restaurant owner. Their reunion stirs old feelings and makes Ryle jealous.
My pronunciation still needs a lot of improvement, and I still struggle with many words. Nevertheless, even if I don’t understand everything word for word, I can grasp the meaning of the sentences. When I come across a word I didn’t know existed, I look up its definition and write it down in a notebook along with its translation. This allows me to have a small vocabulary notebook.

Week of 17 febuary
Chapters 21-30: The Violence Escalates
Although Lily is happy with Ryle, his violent tendencies resurface. He seriously injures her after finding an old letter about Atlas. Lily is devastated but tries to justify his actions, hoping he will change. However, she slowly realizes she is at risk of repeating her mother’s cycle of domestic abuse.
I enjoy reading; it helps me relax. Thus, reading in English becomes enjoyable, even though it remains complicated. I still struggle with reading; it takes time, but it helps me improve. Reading in English allows me to discover and learn new vocabulary. In the long run, reading will help me progress.

Week of 24 febuary
Chapters 31-40: The Awakening
Lily becomes pregnant with Ryle, making the situation even more complicated. After another violent attack, she decides to leave him to protect her child. She finds support in Atlas, who encourages her to walk away from Ryle for good. Lily finally understands that love should never justify suffering.
Reading in English is gradually helping me improve, even though I still don't understand all the words. Over time, I am getting used to sentence structures and expanding my vocabulary. Even when some passages remain unclear, I am becoming better at grasping the overall meaning.

Week of 3 march
Chapters 41-Epilogue: Breaking the Cycle
After her daughter is born, Lily makes a crucial decision: she asks Ryle for a divorce. She wants to give her child a life free from abuse, just as she wished her mother had done for her. In the final pages, she reconnects with Atlas, suggesting that a new beginning is possible.
I really enjoyed reading in English. My difficulties make reading slow and complicated. Nevertheless, I did not give up, and I kept going. Thanks to this, I was able to improve my comprehension and learn new words.Having enjoyed reading, when time allows, I will read the second volume. However, I don’t know the story of this one yet, so it will be a discovery.
Friends
Week of the 10 march
In December, I wanted to challenge myself by watching Friends to improve my English. Unfortunately, the series had disappeared from the Netflix platform, so I gave up. However, I decided to try again, so I bought the series. Friends is a cult American TV series that aired from 1994 to 2004. It follows the lives of six friends (Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe) living in New York. Mixing humor, romance, and heartfelt moments, the series explores their relationships, careers, and daily lives, often centered around a coffee shop called Central Perk. It’s a great show for learning English because the vocabulary is common, and the dialogues are clear and well-paced. The characters also have different speaking styles, which helps in getting used to various ways of speaking.

Weekend in PortAventura
Some friends and I went to PortAventura in Salou, Spain. Thanks to this trip, I was able to work on my English. It forced me to speak English and understand what was being said to me. Sometimes it was very complicated for me, so I switched to Spanish, which is much easier. Nevertheless, during the weekend it forced me to exchange and strengthen my English, by practising my English. I had a great weekend and we had a lot of fun. Thanks to this weekend, we've set up amusement park weekends every two months, which will also allow me to travel and improve my English.

Weekend English Challenge with My Family
Weekend of 3 and 4 may
During the weekend, my family and I organized a special challenge: we decided to spend the entire weekend speaking only in English. From breakfast conversations to board games, every interaction had to be in English. It was a fun and immersive way to practice our language skills in everyday situations. We helped each other with vocabulary, laughed at funny mistakes, and even discovered new expressions. It wasn’t always easy, but it really pushed us to think and communicate differently. This experience showed me how valuable it is to practice English in real-life contexts. I realized that I can express more than I thought, and I feel more confident using English in casual conversations now.

Our Second English-Only Weekend
Weekend of 31 may and 1 june
After enjoying our first English-only weekend so much, we decided to do it again! Speaking only English for two full days has become a new family tradition. It’s still a real challenge for all of us. For our parents, it’s a great way to prepare for situations at work where English is needed. For my sisters and me, it helps us build confidence and improve our fluency for our future studies and careers. Even though we sometimes struggle to find the right words, we help each other and learn together. It’s motivating to see how each of us is progressing in our own way. This shared experience makes learning English more fun, meaningful, and connected to our everyday lives.
