Functional Shift

Functional shift is one of the ways nouns are formed, which is also known as conversion, converts another part of speech into a noun, so it allows the word to function in a different class. This type of noun formation is easily used in English, due to the fact that it doesn't necessarily need an ending to identify grammatical categories. So for example, you can say: My father is a spy, as an adjective. I spy people when they're not looking, as a verb. A spy tried to catch me, as a noun.

Examples: His face bears few scars. My chair doesn't recline. The judge ruled in favor of my dad You've to face your fears. I chaired the meeting in Don't judge a book by its cover 10 minutes notice
