Romany is an international star. She works around the world on cruise ships, performing a funny, entertaining magic show. She is very successful. She even performed at Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday party. Although Romany has an extraordinary life, her early life was very ordinary. As a child, she loved ballet. She hoped that one day she would work as a dancer. She was very good at it, and at the age of fifteen, she was given a role in a show. But she had to stay on a very strict diet to take part. She managed to stay very slim, but she developed a serious eating problem.

First step!

Listen the following podcast without the transcription and try to get the main idea!

Reading activity for improving vocabulary!
  • Read the text quickly to understand the main idea. Don’t stop for every new word.
  • Read the text again and underline or highlight words you don’t know.
  • Look at the sentence and try to guess the meaning of the new words based on context.
  • Check the meaning of the words you couldn’t guess. Write down their definitions in a notebook.
  • Write sentences, talk about the text, or create a summary using the new vocabulary.

Practice

Reading helps you learn new words in context. When you read a story, article, or book, you see how words are used in sentences, which makes them easier to understand and remember. For example, if you read about a forest, you might learn related words like tree, leaves, and wildlife. Reading regularly expands your vocabulary naturally

Reading for learning vocabulary

Practice

Associating words with others helps you make connections and remember vocabulary better. For example, when you learn the word manage, you can connect it to manager and management. This technique helps reinforce vocabulary and deepens your understanding of how words relate to each other.

Spidergrams...

Spidergrams are a creative way to organize and link new vocabulary. You start by writing a central word in the middle of a page, and then draw lines outward to connect related words or ideas. These connections can include synonyms, antonyms, or words that belong to the same category. Using spidergrams helps you visualize how words are related, making it easier to understand and remember them. It's a great tool for expanding vocabulary and improving word recall.

Cognates are words in two languages that look or sound similar and have the same meaning. For example, actor in English and actor in Spanish, or family in English and familia in Spanish. These words can help you understand and learn new vocabulary more easily!

Listening for improving vocabulary!

Listening to conversations, podcasts, or songs is an excellent way to learn new vocabulary. It helps you hear how words are pronounced and used in different contexts, making it easier to understand and remember them. By regularly listening to spoken language, you get used to the natural flow of words, phrases, and expressions. This method also helps you improve your listening skills while expanding your vocabulary.

Second step!

Listen again and identify the words you don't know. Then, check the meaning.
