madonna of the goldfinch

Patronage by the Catholic Church led to an abudance of religious art during the Renaissance.

Realism

Creation of Adam (cropped)

c. 1508-1512 by Michelangelo c. 1536-1541

What makes Renaissance paintings and sculptures so different than the art created during the Medieval period is the realistic representation of humans and nature. Using techniques such as perspective and foreshortening, the Renaissance artists managed to create an illusion of three dimensions. The Last Judgement is an example of New Protestant art, which depicts a more personal relationship with God, replacing the previous era's works that showed pictures form Bible stories.

Increasing knowledge of human anatomy formed a bridge between science and art – new scientific awareness of bodily construction had a remarkable impact on artists' ability to convey lifelike figures in dynamic poses and interactions.

Visual content is a cross-cutting, universal language, like music. We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures. We better grasp visual content. Visual content is associated with cognitive and psychological mechanisms. Things enter through the eyes, the first image is what counts. We associate visual content with emotions. Our brain is prepared to consume visual content. Some data: 90% of the information we process comes through sight, and we process visual content up to 60,000 times faster than text. That’s why visual communication is more effective.

Sfumato

Nativity (The Holy Night)

by Antonio da Correggioc. 1529-1530

"Sfumato" in art refers to a painting technique where colors and tones are blended so subtly that there are no harsh outlines, creating a soft, smoky appearance, often used to depict a sense of depth and atmosphere, with the word itself deriving from the Italian "sfumare" meaning "to evaporate like smoke". The Mona Lisa in particular uses this style to reflect the emerging role of women during the Renaissance Period.
