What can cause food insecurity?
Your Task
In groups of 4, you will create a plan to support people who are food insecure in our town.
Create a visual presentation (Google Slide, Genially, Jamboard, etc.) of your proposal which will contain the following:
- What actions you will take.
- How much it will cost and who you will need help from.
- Why it will help people who are food insecure. This should not be a short-term solution. It should help people get back on their feet long-term.

War
70% of food insecurity around the world is caused by war. Wars can cause problems with food production and can cause people to lose their homes and jobs. Sometimes people have to leave their town or country due to war. Source: World Food Programme, 2024
Natural Disasters
Sometimes a family who usually has everything they need can become food insecure after a natural disaster like a hurricane, tornado, or flood. Source: Feeding America, 2024
Opportunities
Contextualize your topic
- Plan the structure of your communication.
- Give it a hierarchy and give visual weight to the main point.
- Add secondary messages with interactivity.
- Establish a flow through the content.
- Measure results.
Money
Some people may not have enough money to buy food on a regular basis. This can be caused by:
- Unemployment.
- High price of food (groceries or eating out).
- Too many other bills (expensive housing, medical bills, etc.).
Racism & Discrimination
People from certain races or groups have a harder time getting jobs and getting the things they need due to racism and discrimination. Source: Feeding America, 2024
