Since this study was a qualitative case study, the findings were more practically significant than statistically significant. The study's data is largely descriptive given the data collection methods. Also, since the study gathered data from only two sources, the findings are not statistically significant compared to similar studies with a quantitative approach. However, the practical significance of the the study is made clear in the applicability of the findings.

Statistical Significance

This case study, an example of qualitative research, collected and analyzed non-numerical data to answer the inquiry. Creswell states, "Although the processes are similar, qualitative methods rely on text and image data, have unique steps in data analysis, and draw on diverse procedures" (191). The study's data embraced qualitative rather than quantitative methods to pursue the inquiry. Because the study's data does not rely on statistical data, the study does not carry statistical significance.

Practical Significance

The findings proved to be practically significant for public libraries and their programs for adolescents. The concluding sentence of the study asserts: "Public library online book clubs are sites of possibility - a medium through which libraries can more readily encourage literate practices in the next generations" (188). The study's findings reveal the impact of online book clubs on adolescents' involvement in literacy. Public libraries can apply the study's findings to implement online book clubs in a variety of communities.

"This manuscript offers theoretical grounding and rich, practical details so that other libraries can capitalize and create their own online book clubs" (176).

The findings are also practically significant for school libraries. In the paper's conclusion, the researchers affirm, "The future of successfully engaging preteens and teens in literacy activities (i.e. reading and talking about a good book!) depends in part on offering the option to do it online" (188). School librarians can use this study's findings to create online book clubs which engage students. Therefore, school libraries are ideally positioned to increase student interest in reading through the implementation of online book clubs.

Conclusions

Although this study is not statistically significant, it has practical significance for public and school libraries in today's world.

This study's practical significance outweighs its statistical significance, but the study's meaning is valid and grounded. In his book, Neil J. Salkind explains, "Statistical significance is the probability assigned to a particular outcome...However, regardless of how useful a tool it is, a very important dimension of any research study and accompanying statistical analysis is left out - the evaluation of the finding's meaningfulness" (167). The meaning of a study's findings reveals the real-world applicability of the results.
