The Spanish monarchy was consolidated when, in the second half of the 15th century, the crowns of Castile and Aragon were united through the marriage of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon (the Catholic Monarchs). Daughter of Íñigo López de Mendoza and Francisca Pacheco, she had eight siblings, including Luis Hurtado de Mendoza y Pacheco, II Marquis of Mondejar; Francisco de Mendoza, Bishop of Jaén; Antonio de Mendoza y Pacheco, Viceroy in the Indies; and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza.
