The Spanish monarchy was consolidated when, in the second half of the 15th century, the crowns of Castile and Aragon were united through the marriage of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon (the Catholic Monarchs). Subsequently, other territories were incorporated, such as those of Granada and Navarre, or the areas that were gradually conquered in America.

Daughter of Íñigo López de Mendoza and Francisca Pacheco, she had eight siblings, including Luis Hurtado de Mendoza y Pacheco, II Marquis of Mondejar; Francisco de Mendoza, Bishop of Jaén; Antonio de Mendoza y Pacheco, Viceroy in the Indies; and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza.
