ACTIVITY 1: An Introduction to Pressure

1. What is pressure? 2. Can air exert pressure? 3. What can air pressure tell us about the aluminum can?

Exploration #1: Can of Air vs. can of water

You will need:

  • 3 empty, clean, dry aluminum soda cans (1 can is dry and left at room
  • temperature as a control for comparison)
  • Some water to fill the bottom of the can
  • Hot plate
  • Beaker tongs or oven mitts
  • Large bowl or pan of ice water
