It was commissioned by Manuel de Godoy, the Prime Minister of Spain, and is known for its sensuality and the mystery surrounding the woman’s identity.
It is famous for its candid and somewhat unflattering depiction of the royal family, with Goya subtly critiquing their appearance and demeanor.
It highlights Goya’s skill at capturing the personality and status of his royal subjects, with a direct and regal expression.

A powerful depiction of Spanish resistance fighters being executed by French soldiers, symbolizing the horrors of war.
A light, lively portrait of a young woman holding a parasol, capturing the elegance and fashion of the time.

The Parasol / El parasol

  • This painting depicts a young woman who is sitting, with a dog on her lap, and is accompanied by a Majo who protects her from the sun with a parasol.
  • This work's format and bottom-to-top perspective indicates that it was intended to hang over a window.
  • It's pyramidal composition, with the figures in the foreground, reflects the influence of classical Italian painting on Goya, as well as his mastery at painting light and shadows.
  • This was intended to hang in the dining room of the royal family.

Visual content is a cross-cutting, universal language, like music. We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures. We better grasp visual content. Visual content is associated with cognitive and psychological mechanisms. Things enter through the eyes, the first image is what counts. We associate visual content with emotions. Our brain is prepared to consume visual content. Some data: 90% of the information we process comes through sight, and we process visual content up to 60,000 times faster than text. That’s why visual communication is more effective.

REALISM

Goya's works, especially in his later years, show a shift toward a more realistic depiction of the world, focusing on the raw, unfiltered aspects of life. His Black Paintings and Los Caprichos series express a gritty realism, exposing societal flaws, suffering, and madness.

ROMANTICISM

AS Goya’s style matured, he became associated with Romanticism. His later works, such as The Third of May 1808 and The Disasters of War series, reflect Romanticism’s focus on emotion, individualism, and the dramatic, often dark, aspects of human experience.

BAROQUE INFLUENCE

Early in his career, Goya was influenced by the Baroque style, particularly in his use of light and shadow. His dramatic contrasts of light and dark are evident in many of his works, such as The Parasol and The Third of May.

ROCOCO

In his early career, Goya was influenced by the Rococo style, particularly in his portraits of the Spanish aristocracy. These works, such as The Family of the Duke of Osuna, are characterized by light, decorative elements, soft colors, and an emphasis on elegance.
