The Knowledge framework
TOK DP1 SEK Ciudlacampo
- Core theme: Knowledge and the knower
- Optional themes:
- Knowledge and politics
- Knowledge and technology
The knowledge framework organizes the analysis of knowledge in four frames, allowing comparisons of how knowledge is created, interpreted and applied within the context of each of AOK and theme.
SCOPE:
- Problems and issues that this particular AOK (or theme) attempts to solve
- Consider issues of knowledge in the context of other AOK and themes
- What makes the knowledge produced in this AOK or theme important?
E.g. Human vs Natural Sciences
PERSPECTIVES:
- Identifying bias
- Understanding the role of context on knowledge creation (cultural and/or historical)
- Knowledge is created in the context of culture, and just as culture changes over time, so do perspectives on knowledge.
e.g. Role of the context in History or the Arts
METHODS AND TOOLS:
- Explaining the ways in which knowledge can be acquired.
- Provide insight into the answer to the question ‘Why do you think that?’
- Some AOKs have methodologies that are quite regimented and steeped in traditions and paradigms (mathematics, for example) while others have less regimented methodologies and embrace the integration of new tools of knowledge construction (the arts, for example)
- We will analyse the implications of these differences and the similarities that exist within the methodologies and tools of knowledge construction between different AOKs
ETHICS
- The moral responsibility one has
- Inquiry in all the AOKs is limited by ethical constraints
- Analysing the pros and cons of such limitations is useful to understand the scope of knowledge within an AOK.
- Reflecting on an individual knower’s ethical responsibilities once they have acquired knowledge and when they propagate it.
