- Design dedicated data collection tools, by ensuring that they collect gender-disaggregated data; train data collectors on the importance of gender sensitivity; and recruit a diverse team of data collectors.
- Adjust existing methods to include more women, account for intersectionality, and address gender-specific issues.
- Use a variety of methods to analyse gender differences.
- Organize sex-disaggregated consultations and other in-person activities, and be conscious of possible logistical barriers (e.g. childcare) to the meaningful participation of women. Note that there are advantages and disadvantages to the use of sex-disaggregated in-person data collection tools, and deciding whether or how to apply them depends largely on cultural dynamics and perceptions.
- Tailor your stakeholder analysis to gain an understanding of the power dynamics between groups, the gender differences between and among groups, and where their interests differ, so that you can tailor your data collection to identify differences in perceptions, needs, expectations, barriers, opportunities, priorities, etc.
- Identify gaps in the data and plan for how to collect additional information by mapping what data is available across relevant topics and what type of information it is.
- Always enquire, in the case of secondary data collection, about the original data collection design, methodology, and tools, to identify and control for possible gender biases.
