NALOXONE (NARCAN) Opioid antagonist
If you suspect an overdose, call 911 immediately and administer Narcan.
Narcan rapidly reverses an overdose by blocking the effects of opioids on the brain. Within 2 to 3 minutes, it can restore normal breathing in individuals whose breathing has slowed or stopped due to an overdose.
Signs of an overdose include:
- slowed or shallow breathing
(or no breathing)
- loss of consciousness
- gurgling or snoring noises
- limp body
- skin that is pale, blue, and/or cold
HOW DO I ADMINISTER IT?
WHAT IS NARCAN?
Narcan is a life-saving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose — including fentanyl, heroin, and prescription opioid medications — when given in time.
- Remove Narcan from box
- Hold with your thumb, first and middle finger
- Insert tip into either nostril
- Press the plunger firmly
ADVERSE EFFECTS
Tremors, drowsiness, agitation, hypertension (increased blood pressure), tachycardia (increased heart rate), nausea, and vomiting
Start by administering one dose and wait 2-3 minutes to see if normal breathing returns before giving second dose
