Il romanzo è la principale forma narrativa dell'800 perché risponde meglio alle esigenze del Romanticismo: la descrizione della realtà e l'analisi delle principali problematiche (politiche, spirituali, emotive, intellettuali) che attanagliano l'essere umano. Nei primi decenni del secolo prevale una narrativa lirico-soggettiva che ha ad oggetto soprattutto i sentimenti ed i conflitti interiori dei suoi personaggi che, molte volte, raccontano in prima persona le loro vicende (così, ad es., I dolori del giovane Werther di Goethe e Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis di Foscolo). Un genere che acquista particolare fortuna è, poi, il racconto fantastico che, muovendo dal romanzo gotico settecentesco (v. Dracula di Bram Stocker) e da una visione tormentata del mondo, predilige ambientazioni tenebrose, con personaggi diabolici ed incursioni nel paranormale (v. i Racconti di Edgar Allan Poe). Grande fortuna ebbe anche il romanzo realistico che si caratterizza per la narrazione di vicende di vita reale, l'ambientazione precisa e dettagliata, le sequenze temporali ben definite (la storia è sempre una concatenazione logica di eventi che si susseguono): il narratore è esterno ed onnisciente ed analizza con estrema lucidità le passioni ed i travagli dei protagonisti (v. Madame Bovary di Flaubert ed I Malavoglia di Giovanni Verga che, in Italia, darà vita al "verismo").
