  • 12th century: England invaded Ireland/claimed sovereignty
  • In the 1690s: system of Protestant English rule designed to disadvantage the Catholics
  • Act of Union in 1801: Ireland became a part of the UK
  • the 1840s: half of Ireland's population were farmers who had to pay rent
