What is Atrial Flutter?
Signs and Symptoms include
Atrial flutter is classified as a supraventricular arrhythmia and is recognized as one of the most prevalent cardiac disturbances. This condition is characterized by regions exhibiting both rapid and slow conduction velocities. It represents an abnormal heart rhythm that leads to an accelerated beating in the upper chambers of the heart. (Ziccardi M.R.et al 2022)
- Palpatations
- Lightheadedness
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Decreased exercise tolerance
- Dizziness
- Fainting
- Tightness in chest
- Sometimes there are no symptoms at all
Certain diagnostic tests and laboratory findings can identify disturbances in electrolyte levels, infections, anemia, hypoxia, and irregular thyroid function. Correlations have been established between atrial flutter and pulmonary diseases. Effective management of the pulmonary condition may lead to improvements in atrial flutter.(Cosio F.G.et al (2017).
Diagnostic Tests
- ECG
- Echocardiogram
- Electrophysiological study
- Lab tests
- Portable holter monitor
Treatment
- Beta blockers, such as Atenolol, are employed to mitigate the effects of stress hormones on the heart, thereby effectively reducing heart rate.
- Calcium Channel Blockers, including Verapamil, facilitate the relaxation of the heart walls, consequently leading to a decrease in heart rate.
- Anticoagulants like Coumadin may be prescribed to prevent the occurrence of embolic strokes.
- Non-pharmacological strategies, including cardioversion for rhythm restoration and catheter ablation using thermal or cryogenic techniques to eliminate sources of irregular heartbeats.(hopkinsmedicine.org et al 2024)
Management
Your dedicated nurse will assist you in developing a comprehensive care plan that considers your health history, a thorough cardiac assessment, and any potential risk factors for atrial flutter. She will collaborate with a team of compassionate professionals, all committed to supporting you in implementing positive lifestyle changes, such as dietary modifications, exercises, and careful management of your medications.
