YOU MATTER!
Review
Almost everything is made of matter!
Matter can be natural or man-made.
Matter is anything that takes up space.
Properties of Matter:-mass -volume -density
What is Matter?
Gas (water vapor)
Liquid (water)
Solid (ice)
What do you notice?

Solids, Liquids, and Gases: Your Turn!
Tomorrow!
Changes in temperature and pressure can cause matter to change phases.
The three main states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.

I Can
- Define temperature
- Describe what happens to a material when it changes its state.
- Give examples of changes in states of matter.
Examples of phase changes include melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation.
Changes of state are physical changes, they do not change the chemical composition of the substance.
States of Matter
Matter exists in three main states: solid, liquid, and gas.
Energy is either released or absorbed during these phase changes.
Melting, freezing, vaporization, condensation, sublimation, and deposition are the six common phase changes.
Phase Changes
Phase changes occur when matter transitions from one state to another.
Check out how Water goes through Phase Changes!
Due to changes in TEMPERATURE and PRESSURE
CHANGES IN STATE
Changes in state refer to the physical changes that matter undergoes when it transitions from one state (solid, liquid, or gas) to another.
Changes in State
Evaporation is the process by which a liquid is heated and transformed into a gas. This occurs when the temperature of the material reaches its boiling point.
Evaporation
Freezing is the process by which a liquid is cooled and transformed into a solid. This occurs when the temperature of the material reaches its freezing point.
Freezing
Melting is the process by which a solid is heated and transformed into a liquid. This occurs when the temperature of the material reaches its melting point.
Melting
Changes in State
Deposition is the opposite of sublimation, where a gas turns directly into a solid without first becoming a liquid.
Deposition
Sublimation is the process of a solid turning directly into a gas without first becoming a liquid.
Sublimation
Condensation is the process by which a gas is cooled and transformed into a liquid. This occurs when the temperature of the material reaches its condensation point.
Condensation
- Visit the States of Matter and observe the molecular arrangement in solids, liquids, and gases.
- Adjust the temperature to demonstrate the processes of melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, sublimation, and deposition through phase changes.
- Additionally, adjust the pressure, change the types of atoms, and explore the interactions section!oms, and explore the interactions section!

What causes this change in the gas in the bottle/balloon?
Question to think about:
The increase/decrease of heat causes the change in the gas.

Melting Point
Boiling Point
Volume
Properties that can be measured or observed without the matter changing into a different substance.
Solubility
Density
Mass
Appearance
Physical Properties of Matter
Making sugar water
Boiling water
Changes that occur when matter changes state.-change in energy within the matter -can be undone -does not change what the substance is -no new substance is formed
Chopping wood
Physical Changes
Is making a popsicle a physical change?
Question to think about:
Pressure in the atmosphere, Earth, and laboratory can also change the state of matter.
Pressure
They exhibit pressure, temperature, and volume properties known as the Gas Laws.
They have low density and are highly compressible (can easily squish).
Gases have neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume.
Characteristics of Gases
Liquids cannot be compressed (squished) easily.
Liquids can flow and take the shape of their container.
Liquids have a definite volume but NOT a definite shape.
Characteristics of Liquids
Solids can only change shape under external force.
The molecules in solids are tightly packed together.
Solids have a definite shape and volume.
Characteristics of Solids
Temperature is the measurement that tells how hot ot cold a material is. When a material's temperature changes, its state may change.
