The Silenced Voice of Marginalization

The 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games focus on promoting inclusion and social cohesion by uniting people from diverse backgrounds through sports. Values such as fair play and solidarity are encouraged both in sports and daily life. Additionally, initiatives like an incubation program for elite athletes support projects with social and environmental impact. The Kabubu initiative aims to foster friendships between locals and refugees through sports tournaments. With a commitment to accessibility, the event expects to welcome 350,000 visitors with disabilities, ensuring an inclusive and lasting experience for all.

Martín, F. (2024, July 4). In 2023, 21% of the population of the European Union (EU), equivalent to 94.6 million people, was at risk of poverty or social exclusion, according to Eurostat. The most affected countries include Romania (32%), Bulgaria (30%), and Spain (27%). In Spain, the National Institute of Statistics reported that 26.5% of the population was in this situation, with a notable increase in severe material deprivation. Factors such as rising energy and food prices have exacerbated the situation, particularly affecting low-income households. The Aliança contra la Pobresa Energètica advocates for debt cancellation to ensure access to basic services (Martín, 2024).

The 2023/2024 report from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) highlights the increasing global inequality that is exacerbating the divide between rich and poor countries, threatening world stability. Although the Human Development Index (HDI) is projected to reach historic highs, this progress is uneven; wealthy nations are advancing while many of the poorest are struggling to recover their pre-pandemic levels. The situation is further complicated by armed conflicts, democratic crises, and the impact of COVID-19, necessitating renewed international cooperation to tackle these interconnected challenges and avoid prolonged stagnation.

The proposed constitutional changes in Mexico, driven by the Morena party, have raised serious concerns about the protection of human rights and judicial independence. Human Rights Watch (2024) has pointed out that these reforms would allow for the election of judges by popular vote, which could compromise their impartiality. Additionally, there is a push to expand automatic preventive detention and eliminate restrictions on the military's involvement in civilian matters, potentially facilitating abuses of power. The dissolution of the agency responsible for transparency would also increase state control over information, thereby undermining mechanisms for accountability and justice in the country (WOLA, 2024).

Welle, D. (2024, 31 julio). The situation in Gaza is critical, with over 30,000 deaths reported due to the war. Recently, the Israeli army fired on a crowd attempting to obtain food, resulting in at least 104 Palestinians dead and 760 injured. The UN has condemned violations of international law by Israel, while in Nicaragua, human rights violations have been documented that could be considered crimes against humanity. The humanitarian crisis is severe, with limited access to aid and an alarming increase in malnutrition among children.

Hassan, T. (2023). The human rights system is under threat. In this text, Tirana Hassan, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, highlights the increase in human rights violations in 2023, including repression in armed conflicts and economic inequality. She criticizes the selective diplomacy of governments and emphasizes the importance of defending the universal principles of human rights established 75 years ago to ensure the dignity and freedom of all people. The current situation requires a renewed commitment to these principles to address global crises.
