American elections
States oversee their own elections, which means polling times vary from state to state. The first polls close on Election Day at 6 p.m. in some countries in Indiana and Kentucky, and the last polls close at 1 a.m. November 6, in Alaska. Waves of state polls close every hour in between. More than 150 million people are likely to cast ballots for the office of president on or before Election Day. But it’s 538 electors who will choose the president in a process on December and January.
Each state gets a certain number of electors based on its representation in Congress. There are a total of 538 electors selected according to each state's policy. Each elector casts one vote following the general election, and the candidate who gets more than half (270) wins.
